Reversing contactor hot

ran down the road and back total about 1.5 miles got back and was shooting temperatures on components, connections, motor, etc. Everything was 80-90F, except for reversing contactor...one side was 87F, other was 185F. Is this temp normal?

No that is not normal. You must have a bad connection there causing it to heat up.

if You are using an Albright SW202 Style Reversing Contactor, make sure the terminals without cables are also tight.

Figured I'd post an update in case anyone else has this problem. After sending and having rev cont tested (thanks ScottyB!) and confirmed good, think I've figured out it was due to a diode or risistor I'd forgot to put back on the solenoid of the 'go-fast' button I'd rigged up. Not exactly sure how this caused excess heat?? but working with ScottyB to figure out what needs to be installed on solenoid. BTW, the 'go-fast' button didn't need to be used for the excess heat to occur. Will post final resolution (diode/resistor) when done

Why would you put that junk on your cart? Everyone knows shunt systems are destructive. There is no free speed.

Well mine wasnt wired quite that bad, and i only plan to use it to hurry and get on and off blacktop when going to and from hunting spot. Would like to know the science behind why contactor was getting so hot...and how to prevent heat - diode? resistor? Where exactly to place them on solenoid??

That picture is text book on how NOT to complete high amperage connections. Your high amperage connections should be first on the stud, followed by any other smaller low amperage and well fitted ring terminals and then only as needed does one use a lock and/or flat washer....

If that is your "go fast" solenoid, you have to remove the resistor or it will get hot when the solenoid is OFF.
