Default Dimly lit State of Charge meter

This is a new one on me, maybe some one else can help. I have a friend's '99 EZGO DCS cart, 2014 Trojan batteries were charged overnight and currently show 39.1 volts. When the key is turned on the stock SOC meter lights the meter brightly, when the key is off it stays lit, but is dim when it should be totally out. I checked the voltage on the key switch wires. Key switch off 39.1 volts on yellow wire, 6.9 volts on the white wire. Shouldn't the white wire show 0 volts with the key switch off? With the key switch on both wires show 39.1 volts. Any ideas?

I should mention that my friends original complaint was that occasionally the cart would not run. That led me to check over all the wiring (key switch, motor, solenoid, controller, and pedal box). Everything was good except for a slightly loose connection on the pedal box microswitch. I noticed the SOC problem after all was hooked back up. It is not known if SOC problem existed before I unhooked the batteries from the cart to check the wiring and I'm not sure if the two issues are related.

Unplug the output of the keyswitch from the keyswitch. If the meter stays dimly lit, the stray voltage is not coming from the keyswitch.

cgtech, thanks for responding. I don' t think it's coming from the key switch, but here's what I just did. Unhooked white wire from the keyswitch, no dim light. With white wire still unhooked, turn key on, meter lights normally.

Went and hooked the white wire back up and unhooked the yellow wire, now the meter is dimly lit with the key on or off. I guess the stray voltage is coming through the white wire. Where does that wire go? Controller? Will have to see a wiring diagram.

Thanks tag50, but my switch only has two spades, it is a DCS cart. I tried a spare keyswitch I had with the same results. Also tried another SOC meter, same results. The stray voltage seems to be coming from the white/yellow wire. According to the diagram it goes to the solenoid. Not sure how to proceed.

I'm pretty sure all DCS carts behave this way with key off and selector in gear. Moving the selector to neutral will kill the meter display.

I just called my friend to update him. He said that he believes the dim display has always existed with the key off, bright with the key on. I wish a DCS cart owner would chime in on this. GORNOMAN was probably on the right track.

I don't know squat about Ezgo, but I'd give a hard look at the diode and pre-charge resistor connections for something touching that shouldn't. Grabbing at straws here.

PS- If Gorno is on right track, maybe an m/s on F/R?
