Default 2007 electric ezgo motor smoking

I just bought a 2007 ezgo last night that came without a controller. The cart has a lift and large wheels and tires. I had a new stock controller and solenoid installed today, filled up the batteries and charged it. Took it for a ride with 3 little kids and my wife and it was sluggish up Hills and flats. We then noticed it was smoking a little out of the motor. What's causing this. Do I need to upgrade the controller.

well for starters....which drive system is your cart....SERIES or SEPEX. either way, the cause could be that the cart in its former life has been abused (why it didn't have a controller when you got it) and having a lift with larger wheels/tires has put a fair amount of extra stress on the motor....

Could be bad brushes.

The PO said his son left the golf cart running while charged against a wall in his garage for 5 hours and burned the controller up. I'm worried he also burned the motor. Could the weight have made it act that way. 2 adults and 3 children. Wouldn't think so but thought I'd ask. The model is txtpds. Let me know your thought.

Charging with the key ON very likely did NOT damage anything...

When I say running the gas pedal was pressed down and stuck under something so it was under a load.

Guy claimed his 19 year old son parked it inthe garage and hooked it up and the pedal got stuck on some carpet and it was revving for 5 hours. I find it hard to believe but what do I know.

If its brushes do I need to replace the motor? Is there an upgrade or would I need to upgrade my controller as well, meaning I just threw 250 down the drain on the stock controller?

You can get a stock motor to go with your stock controller, but it's always gonna suck with a big load and the oversize tires.

What is your long term intended use for the cart?
