Default ezgo 1998 electric beeps but no reverse

First time on this forum! I have a 36 volt Ezgo 1998 electric car. Last season ran no problems. In the fall the battery's were charged and the car was placed in cold storage. This spring the battery's were burst(frozen). I purchased six new battery's and installed them. Now I have a reverse beeper sounding all the time. When the gas pedal is depressed it moves forward but not as fast as it once did and the beeper stops. If I shift the lever to reverse and step on the pedal it still goes in forward with no beeper but once the cart stops the beeper sounds again within a minute. Any suggestions? thanks...Rob

A fully charged golf cart battery will tolerate temperature down to about -90°F, but a fully discharged cart battery freezes at about +32°F.

Lead-acid batteries self discharge at about 1% per day and unless the battery pack cables are disconnected from the controller, the controller will also draw some current, increasing the discharge rate.

For your batteries to survive winter storage, either give them a boost charge at least every 30 days or use a charger that float charges.

What you are describing is a failed DCS controller, so I suspect you have a DCS cart. If it has a Run/Tow switch on the controller cover, it is a DCS. (Model year 1998 - 2000 and up would be a PDS)

The stock DCS controller (Curtis 1206SX) was a flawed design, so don't waste your money buying another one. Install an Alltrax DCX or XCT controller and be done with it.

Thanks JohnnieB for the quick response to my request. You are correct my unit has a run/tow switch. The P/N on the controller is 73144G06 Serial/n 1065-Po35346. Is this the 1206SX that you mentioned? if so what does one have to do to install the Alltrax controller that you have recommended>

Yes that is a Curtis 1206SX and you have a cart with a DCS drive system.

The Alltrax DCX controller was developed as an aftermarket replacement for the Curtis 1206SX and is plug-n-play. It is user programmable and can be tweaked to perform more to your liking.

The Alltrax XCT controller is newer technology and is more or less plug-n-play electrically, but requires a mounting adapter mechanically. It is also user programmable and connects to a computer via a USB cable while the DCX needs a USB to serial adapter.

Either will improve the cart's performance.

Ok I ordered a DCX300 from a supplier in Winnipeg ( I live in Northwestern Ontario, Canada) It arrived and I have it installed. It came with a fuse to install in series with the batteries. The instructions recommended installing a diode across the coil terminals on the solenoid if there was not one already there. Mine does not have the diode. (1N4004). My question Is, can I operate the cart until I find a diode to install or will I damage something...Thanks...Rob

It won't hurt to run it without the diode for a little while, but I would install one in the next month or so.

The banded end of the diode connects to the small terminal with the red wires on it.

I would not run it without the diode. The reverse voltage generated when the solenoid is de-energized can damage the controller. That is what the diode is for. Try radio shack for the diode if you are in a hurry.
