Upgrade 42v vs. 48?
I just got my new controller (xct400PDS) for an upgrade to my '09 EZGO TXT PDS. I need some battery advise.
Specifically, do I stay with 6v batteries and add one to make it a 42v cart, or upgrade to 6- 8v batteries for a 48 volt upgrade? Scotty B says 48 might be too much for the cart, but can't I just de-tune it through the controller settings? Also, any suggestions on batteries? |

That controller can run 42 or 48 volts. It can be somewhat detuned in programing, BUT I don't believe you can dial down the voltage. I think if you Imput 48, it outputs 48.
Do you have a charger yet? |

It's not voltage but current that might be too much. You can go with 48V and detune the controller to factory current settings and your motor will be fine. You need to upgrade the solenoid to a 48V one though.

Re: Upgrade 42v vs. 48?
If you are running stock height (18") tires, 48V is more than capable of over-revving the stock (36V) PDS motor. However, the XCT has a user adjustable Max RPM limit that can be set to 6000RPM for a top speed about 25.8 MPH on 18" tires. (or 28.0 MPH at 6500RPM)
With 18" tall tires, you can reach, or at least get pretty close, to those speed at 42V also, so the performance difference between 42V and 48V will be acceleration and not slowing quite as much when climbing hills. Another difference is that you can get a greater run-time (range) with a 42V (7x6V) pack than you can with a 48V (6x8V) pack. With either a 42V or a 48V pack, you'll need to tweak the controller settings a bit to get what you want. As for batteries, get the highest AH you can find for the lowest price locally. For 8V batteries, 170 AH or larger For 6V batteries, 225 AH or larger A 48V pack made up of 170AH 8V batteries has roughly the same range as a 36V pack made up from 225 AH 6V batteries. (A 42V made from 225AH 6V batteries has roughly 17% greater range) |
