Default Batteries vs. Freezing

Are there any precautions that need to be taken with regards to the batteries and below freezing weather?

It's very important to keep the batteries fully charged during freezing temps.

I mean more along the lines of the water inside the batteries. Why does it not freeze?

A fully charged battery will not freeze until 60 to 70 below zero whereas a discharged battery can freeze at 20 degrees above zero. As a battery discharges, the acid turns into water by the basic chemical nature of the lead acid battery. The more discharge, the more water and the more likely it is to freeze.

Keep them fully charged, and even better yet get you a charger with a float charge option that stays on continious.

The reason a fully charged battery will not freeze is because of the specific gravity of 1.255 to 1.235 will not freeze, whereas a discharged battery specific gravity is near 1 or water.
