Default easy go charger won't stop charging

my easy go charger won't stop charging batteries.
the amp meter doesn't work, will this somehow affect it's performance?

any suggestions on what/how to test it.

What is the Make/Model of the charger?

(EZGO used a dozen or so different makes and models over the years.)

The ammeter not working may be the reason it isn't charging the batteries, or the charger not putting out any amps may be the reason the ammeter doesn't appear to work.

First step is to identify which charger you have.

it does charge the batteries it just won't stop charging.
I can smell the batteries and there are bubbles forming in the liquid in each battery.
I unplugged it from the wall after it charged for 12 straight hrs.

it is an easy-go Textron charger
powerwise model 28115g02

What you need to know is these batteries could take up to 16 hours to charge. The charger will shut off by itself after 16 hours so let it charge. What you want to do is check the voltage while the cart is charging. They will charge up to 44-46 volts if you have a 36v system before it will kick off by itself. Get a meter on that pack and see what the voltage is and keep an eye on it during charging.

can you clarify where I should be checking for the 44-46 volts.

Across your main pack (+) and (-) connections at the batteries...

You do need a work amp meter on the charger to know which phase the charger is 'stuck' on or how the charger and batteries are doing.
So get online and order that ammeter
I'm sure somebody has already told you that the charger is set to turn off at a preset voltage or 16 hours. If you have a bad battery(ies) they may not reach the cut off point any more.

What year is the cart?
How old are the batteries?

It would be good to know not only the pack voltage 12 hours after the charger is turned off but also the individual battery voltages. This way we can look for a 'bad' one which would keep the charger from cutting off.

Might be interesting to measure the specific gravity of the cells in the batteries. A fully charged cell/battery should show a specific gravity of 1280.

That was how we 'managed' our battery banks on the boat..... Makes it easy to detect bad cells......

SG and voltage will give a very good idea of battery health. Lots of folks mistakenly use the bubble float type hydrometer designed for antifreeze.
These will not work on the battery acid solution. Use a true hydrometer with floating needle and temperature compensating guide or - better yet a refractometer
