Please give me your thoughts - rxv bench seat to carry 4 kids
The measurements look doable after setting the kids in chairs facing eachother at the same distance. I need to carry 2 + 4 and have decided we don't love the idea of a limo.

the weight you are adding is so far out the back, it is going to be very light in the front (= poor steering). the rxv is factory equipped with a Posi, which also makes it "want to go straight". take these into consideration.

I would certainly add the dual action HD springs, my 2010 RXV came with an aftermarked standard rear seat, but standard factory spring. When loaded with 4 adults the rear suspension would bottom out. After adding the dual action rear springs I have no such problems, yet it still rides good when lightly loaded.

Interesting and good idea on the springs. The back would likely never have an adult on it, so I think I have some leeway. I wish I knew exactly where the center of gravity for the cart is so that I could simulate the force on the rear to test.

It looks cool, but as a certified aviation and ground safety officer and accident investigator I would caution that this is probably not a great idea for a whole host of reasons including, but not limited to liability, metal fatigue, crash dynamics, CG loading, instability, and braking adequacy. Maybe give serious consideration to a limo cart if you absolutely must carry 2 adults and 4 kids.

74,
Can you expand on the liability concern? As for metal fatigue and CG, my rough estimation is that the arm will only be about a foot to 1.5 feet further back than it is currently for the back seat riders. I'm not exactly sure where the cg is, but assuming it's roughly under the front seat, that would be an increase in the arm from about 3 feet to 4.5 feet. Mathematically (I just had to spell check that word.. man I'm getting old) the increase in torque of having two 100 pound riders on the very back (900 lbs of force) would be the equivalent of having two 150 pound riders at the normal seat location. The margin of error here is pretty big as we all know people a lot heavier than 150 pile onto the back seat. Braking and instability have not concerned me due to the fact that limo's have the same brakes, and do fine with 6 full size people as well as the added weight of the limo conversion. One concern that is a bit troubling is the location of their noggins. If a sideswipe of a tunnel or other golf cart occurred in a normal seating configuration you might hurt an arm, but in this design their little heads would be the first thing to swipe something. Didn't think of that originally and that may be a deal breaker all by itself. |

Re: Please give me your thoughts - rxv bench seat to carry 4 kids
My main concern, like yours, is the little noggins. Little noggins usually have friends who they will occasionally want to ride along. In the event of an accident, particularly involving a tip over or a rollover or a rear ending, your family might or might not sue, but if there are injuries, especially serious injuries like brain injuries or mobility injuries, liability becomes very problematic and the other families involved will definitely sue.
Also, if on a city street as opposed to on private property, you have additional issues of dealing with police reports, as well as charges of making unsafe modifications to a golf car, and, perhaps most seriously, child endangerment. Prosecutors and child welfare agencies have zero tolerance for such issues and are renowned for going way overboard when there is even the slightest question of child endangerment. Also, when the other family's atty asks the cart manufacturer to comment or testify regarding your mods, there is little chance they will have anything remotely positive to say, quite the opposite actually. There is probably a reason, with respect to crash dynamics, as to why almost all golf cars have seating facing forward or rearward. I can't speak to that. However, your insurance companies, particularly companies like Allstate, will likely refuse any claims that can even remotely be tied to these modifications. There are also other related issues in various states. For example, some require that the roof line must be extended beyond the positioning of the rearmost passenger and there are probably any number of other potential violations of which neither of us are aware. As a CHP friend told me years ago, the California Motor Vehicle Code is many hundreds of pages thick. As drivers, we are required to only know 10-20 of those pages. If someone wants to take a serious shot across your financial bow there is ample probability that between the MVC and existing case law, you will very likely be in a serious predicament. And, particularly with issues like child endangerment, your very freedom can become an issue as well. I usually endeavor to at least consider Murphy's Law when making any decisions on issues like this. And, all of that brings back to the little noggins, which as you said, is the core issue. Regards... |
