06 PDS Jerky going up hills
 
I just recently noticed after my controller upgrade that when I climb up a steep hill my cart seems to cut in and out. Almost like the controller is sending a bad signal or my torque curve isn't right for climbing such a steep incline at low speeds. Not really sure how to explain it. Hopefully someone here knows what I'm talking about. I'm afraid something will eventually break because of how hard it jerks.

How old are the batteries? It could be that the extra power demands from climbing the hill are causing the batteries to drain so far that they are hitting the undercurrent limit of the controller and causing the "shut down" feel of the cart.

Since it only happens under the most severe draw I agree.
What is you in dash voltmeter reading when the cart is cutting out?

I had a feeling that was a possibility. The batteries are over 3yrs old but I still get pretty decent range out of them. I'll probably enjoy the rest of the summer with them and then buy a new pack and convert to 42 volts.

Would you guys recommend 42 volt or go with 6 x 8v for 48 volt pack?

For PDS stock motor use 42v max

Battery brand has a lot to do with life expectancy.

As for the range, when they are not being severely tasked (hill climbing) the running amperage is easily sustained and you can get a great distance, it's those times when you are demanding more from them that will hurt lol......

The PDS stock 2.5 hp motor is pretty voltage sensitive. My experience has
been that when run on 48v the stock PDS motor responds almost violently and the result was it did not last long. So we dialed the voltage back to 7/6v - the torque & speed was still boosted, though not as violent, and the motors lasted much longer. And 42 gives longer run-times. This has been the accepted compromise used for 20 yrs in the industry.

Today's XCT controllers from Alltrax do offer alot more nearly infinite adjustment of ramp rates and customizable bell curves and it is possible you could run on 48 without killing the motor off but, I couldn't tell you what those settings and curves would be.

i have foumd the same thing, the pds motor doesnt really love 48v. it performs well, but not gonna last 10 years like that... mmmm, jerky, think im going to the store..

I guess the reason I'm asking about 48v is that I plan on replacing the motor anyways but I doubt I'll be able to swing it right after buying a new battery pack.
