checking gear ratio
I just picked up a 98 shuttle 6 and im refurbishing the entire cart. I pulled the motor to check the gear ratio and left 1 tire on the ground and i come up with a little more than 7 turns of the input shaft for every turn of the tire. I assume this is a 7.x:1 ratio? I also turned the input shaft 7 times and the tire made 1 revolution. Im kind of shocked b/c ive read on here it should be a 14:1 in the shuttle. Am i doing something wrong?

Re: checking gear ratio
I'm not sure if turning just one tire would alter the apparent gear ratio in any way, but I'd try it with both tires on the ground. Wrap the splines with something to protect them and use a par of vice-grips for the leverage need to turn the differential input shaft.
Stock gears are supposed to be 14.7:1 according to the attached service manual (Pg. V-2). |

Re: checking gear ratio
The open differential ratios are for 1 revolution of both wheels or two revolutions of a single wheel.

Re: checking gear ratio
If you turn only one wheel, you have to divide the apparent ratio by 2. I rolled my cart on the ground to measure the ratio but rotating one wheel works fine as long as you take the differential into account.

Re: checking gear ratio
I vaguely remember that 2 to 1 thing when only one wheel was turning from the hot-rodding days of my youth, but a lot of years has passed since then.
So with only one wheel off the ground, the differential input shaft ought to turn 7.35 times per tire revolution if the gear ratio is 14.7:1. Sounds like the Shuttle-6 has stock gears in it. |

Re: checking gear ratio
Thanks for the help- I've confirmed that with an open rear its 2 revs of the wheel when 1 is on the ground.
