Default 2010 TXT Brake Retrofit to 1987 Marathon

To lay out a little background info, I'll start with a short story. A week ago Scottyb posted some complete EZGO brakes for sale off his cart, they were like new.

http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/golf-...rakes-txt.html

My 87 suffers from poor braking and wobbly hubs, so when I saw what he was asking I pretty much jumped on the chance and figured I could make it work. As it turns out, there isnt much to it and it's pretty much a bolt on modification with only one hitch. This is provided you use the complete braking clusters to swap. Below are some pictures where I'll explain and also detail how I plan to fix the small issue I found for a couple bucks at Lowe's or Home Depot. (Although if someone else has a suggestion that is welcome too, that's what it's all about here. )

Old setup

Manual adjusters

Old and nasty versus new and shiny

They bolt right on!

Hub installed (with anti-seize on the splines first)

You went from the really big brakes to the smaller brakes?

Cables hooked up to the new brakes. I believe on the new TXTs that the cables are above the axle. On this cart they are below, so the clusters are flipped over and switched side for side so that the cable setup will work.

The only problem I've found. The cable tension adjuster under the floor lacks JUST enough rod to hook back up.

I had to back it off all the way for the brake cables to hook up to the new brake levers, and now that all the slack is back forward it lacks a small bit of being able to reattach. My plan is to get a piece of 5/16" all thread and a 5/16" coupler and lengthen the rod. This should complete the swap, once I do this I'll post an update and give my impressions of the new and improved braking!

As far as I could tell, there was virtually no difference in surface area between old and new shoes, and no difference in drum diameter.

Wow ! Great news! You gotta love Ezgo for not changing much in all those yrs.
Best $30 you'll ever spend on the cart - LOL

I was shocked that it worked so easily to be honest. Keep in mind this axle is the ultra weird 86.5-87 non-DANA unit though. From my research, it appears the swap will work on stuff that is 86.5 and up. If someone could get center to center measurements for the backing plate mount holes on a DANA axled Marathon that could tell us if it will work on anything older since we know the axle splines stayed the same.

Could be great news for EZGO owners wanting disc brakes!

And Scotty - this cart has always been a budget master. I FINALLY had to put batteries on it earlier this summer and thats the most I've ever spent on it, buying the thing included.

86.5 and up works for the Ausco heavy duty hub and drum kit as well as for the cable disc brake set, and now we know the reverse works and lots of newer carts like mine can provide brake assemblies for older carts.
PS
My brakes were so new because this cart came off the course through my local dealer and into my hands. The dealer automatically puts new pads, adjusters, and springs on everything.

That dealer did me a big favor!

Thanks for the info and for the chance to get a great deal on some good parts, Scotty.
