Default 96 Ezgo gear change

im wanting to change the bearings and due a little pm on my rear end on my 96 Txt Dcs ,and while im doing that im going to also change the gear. I want to put an 8.1 gear ratio in and im worried if I will lose to much torgue. I have a 6 inch jakes lift with PQ motor and 400 altrax motor. If I upgrade to a 500 amp controller will it make up for the torque loss. Thanks

I would suggest against the high speed gears if you have big offroad tires. The increased loads will shorten motor life. And the torque loss will prohibit using it for much more than anything but flat land street cruising.

Since you have a 6" lift installed, your cart most likely has tires taller than 18" in height, so it already has about 20%, or more, torque loss based on tire height alone. (22" tires = 18% loss ... 23" tires = 22% loss ... 24" tires = 25% loss)

Setting that aside, going from stock (12.44:1) gears to 8:1 gears is a 36% loss in torque throughout the RPM spectrum of the motor, while going from a 400A to a 500A controller is a 25% torque gain at the low end of the RPM spectrum, for a net torque loss of 11%.

You didn't mention which PQ motor is installed, but if it is in a stock length motor housing, it has roughly the same heat dissipating abilities as a stock motor and probably won't tolerate a numerically low final drive ratio coupled with high amps for very long.

----------
How tall are your tires?
Are they on-road or off-road type tires?
What's the battery pack voltage?
What speed are you trying to achieve with your 96 DCS?

Hey Johnnie my tires are 23 inch off road tires and I have the bandit motor. I am trying to get around 27 to 30 mph. I am around 23 mph now. I have a 36 volt system.

I suspect your off-road tires are the low pressure type. (IE: Max PSI <10 PSI) The reason I suspect that is because 23 MPH is about what a DCS ought to get at 36V with an Alltrax controller, stock height (18") tires and a stock motor.

With 23" tall tires (On-road type or high pressure off-road type) and a PQ Bandit, you should already be in your desired speed range of 27 - 30 MPH.

You can reach your speed goal AND gain some torque by upping the battery pack voltage to 42V (26.8 MPH - with a 16.7% increase in torque throughout the motor's RPM spectrum.) or upping it to 48V (30.7 MPH - with a 33.3% increase in torque).
