Questions on replacing rear axle fluid on 2010 rxv
I've got a small leak at my differential cover so I am going to be replacing my fluid and resealing the cover. I have a few questions.
1) the owners manual and service manual conflict on what fluid to put in. One says Mobil 424 & one say 85w-140 plus friction modifier. Which is correct? 2) I have heard about installing the oil through the axle vent tube. I've attached a pic and I want to make sure that the right location. If so, how do i get that vent tube off? 3) The service manual says to use permatex rtv for the sealer. Is there not a gasket for this? I've searched online and can only find a gasket for gas powered. Thanks in advance. |

I use the 85-140 and friction modifier..... no complaints to date.
Do not use the vent tube unless you want to be there for HOURS adding it.... Pull the axle shaft and use a large syringe with a hose on the end of it to push the oil in through the axle tube..... Much quicker and you can get on to other things like riding the cart..... there is no gasket, use permatex RTV black. Make sure you loop around each bolt hole. |

Could you not do the syringe trick through the vent hole? I don't know how big that hole is.
Maybe I'm overthinking this, but it seems like pulling the axle is a lot of work and requires some special tools I don't have. |

Re: Questions on replacing rear axle fluid on 2010 rxv
Pulling the axle requires a pair of snap ring pliers and the tools you need to remove the wheel. You then have an ~2" hole to fill the axle through.
Filling through the vent is like pulling teeth. The vent hole is less than 1/2" and you have 20+ ounces of fluid to feed through it....... When the cart first appeared in 2008, EZGO sent out a service bulletin that said we (as dealers) needed to add 4oz of Friction modifier to the rear end and advised that it could be added through the vent hole. I saw guys spend upwards of 30 minutes trying to add it through that vent hole... 4oz..... 30 minutes...... You are going to be pushing in more than 20oz of fluid........ Pull the axle out, it took less than 30 seconds to add it...... Pulling the tire and axle took 5 minutes at most...... |

OK, i guess the service manual threw me off. So after you undo the snap ring the axle just slides out. On the manual it talks about needing a slide hammer but that may be talking about additional parts that are beyond what we are needing to do.

I have had a few stick in there and need a slide hammer to pull, but that is rare.

The 85w 140 has the friction modifier in it right? Or are you guys saying you have to buy something separate to go with it? I have a 2008 Ezgo rxv

Use 2 ounces of K & W Chemical Trans-X® Posi Trac® Limited Slip Gear Oil Additive also.

Thanks. I found that on amazon for like $13 for 7 oz.
See attached picture. What’s the easiest way for me to get the fluid back in after I drain it? |

I filled mine through the vent hole on top of the left axle tube. Pull the plastic vent out of the tube. Mine came out just using my fingers. It's just plastic so be careful if you have to use pliers. Pump in the fluid with one of the pumps that screw onto the bottle of gear lube. Went in with no problem. Didn't take more than five minutes.
