Marathon owner here
Hello All. I've been wanting a nice cart for a long time now and have studied the subject many times. Since getting a house in the far suburbs of Minnesota last year the desire became almost obsessive. I'm a Mechanic, Fabricator by trade and a novice electrician as far as golf carts go. A month ago a friend gave me a cart that had been abused and sitting behind his shed for 10 years with no batteries or tires. it was a mess but I took it anyway because I saw the potential in it. Right away I started fixing, rebending and making it my own. I actually did tons of work to this cart before I knew if it worked or not. I lived on faith that the electronics were good. Thankfully it worked when I wired it up and got the batteries in it.
I was going to post this in the new member section per rules, but it forbids technical questions, and I have one. Is there an issue with these drum brakes? It's a 94 Marathon. These brakes absolutely suck. I had the drums off 4 times now, cleaned them up along with the pads that look to be in great shape, adjusted them to proper specs and their performance is still sub-par. I went through the whole braking system and it all looks to be in great shape. Is this a known issue with this cart, or am I missing something? it does stop "ok", but I would expect much better out of what I'm looking at. Anyway, I hope these pictures work. Thank you for your time. |

Re: Marathon owner here
I'm currently restoring an 89 marathon gasser that I'll be finishing up the brakes this weekend, been driving it without brakes so any brakes will be a great improvement but I'll let you know how they work.
That blue looks like it matches that yami pretty well, we too have the dirtbike addiction at our house except ours are the green variety so naturally our cart will be kawi green. Good luck and welcome to the madness. |

Re: Marathon owner here
Thanks. Yes, I (we) do have a serious dirt bike addiction as well. Hopefully these pictures work of the (almost) final cart.

Re: Marathon owner here
Hi Jesel, I just bought the same cart, same year, and I'm looking to rebuild it as well. I know this doesn't answer your question but I am curious as to how much lift and what size wheels/ tires you put on it?

Re: Marathon owner here
It is a 5" home made lift with 10" wheels and 22" tires. So far no tire rubbing has occurred, But I also haven't beat on it yet. Feel free to ask any questions and I'll do my best to help you out.

Re: Marathon owner here
What an awesome graveyard save! No clue on the brakes, but after 10 years and a great restoration I would get some modern technology on this, go disc!

Re: Marathon owner here
I finished brake installation with new cables, shoes etc and much like you was quite disappointed in performance, but after some adjusting and tweaking I'm actually quite pleased with them. I have 23" tall tires and can leave skid marks in the driveway.
