Ez-go will only run intermittently

So, when I bought the cart ( 36v txt, not sure what year)it ran, because I rode it around before I bought it, but I got my own batteries and when I got it all hooked up it would go for about twenty feet, then slow to a stop, with the pedal floored, then will suddenly kick in and go for a second, then stop again. I thought it might be the solenoid, so I replaced it, but no luck :/ any ideas?

My guess based upon your description is the batteries are connected wrong. Post some pics of the pack so we can see what is going on here

1. does the solenoid click in and back out when this happens?

The throttle linkage connects to the potentiometer (throttle signal device) which will be referred now to as the pot. There are 2 wires going from the pot to the controller pins #2&3. pull these wires off the controller and stick your ohm meter test leads into their connectors and work the go pedal several times while watching the meter.

It should read 0-5000 Ω more or less a few hundred ohms.

2. The reading should not be delayed and it should be consistent. 0-5000
