1979 Marathon Electric Motor Options
First post here. I've been doing a lot of research and have learned a lot.
I've been given a 1979 Marathon electric cart. I am in the process of doing a frame up restore. All 2AWG wires. Complete new harness for small wires. I've ordered a solid state kit from Scotty already 500/400 Thanks for all the help Scotty! The motor is definitely my weak link, I'm going to try getting by with it for a while but I don't hold out much hope. Current motor tag says 5BC 48 JB 644 B, it's perpendicular to the rear axle mounted directly to the diff, I've been told it's 2 HP. Cart is 36v now but I plan to go 8x6v 48v soon. First question is how do I remove it? PQ has said they can rebuild it if it looks good internally and Scotty has told me he's not aware of an off the shelf upgrade. Is it worth rebuilding or should I do a rear axle swap so I can run a different motor. Thanks, Brandon |

Re: 1979 Marathon Electric Motor Options
What is this swap you speek of? is it only to upgrade the older 79 marathon or is that the same rear end, motor that is also on the later 90 era marathons and we can also upgrade to something better.
What's the best rear end that will take a series motor? |

Re: 1979 Marathon Electric Motor Options
standard 3 leaf rear spring. For E-Z-GO electric 1975-94 pre Medalist
Standard 2 leaf rear spring. For E-Z-GO G&E 1994-09 Medalist/TXT all 65 to 04 use same bushings rear shackles are 94 up and 85 to 94 (same length) 89 is when they went to side mount motor so basically you can swap your rear end for any 89 up ... i would look for 96 up with the newer style brakes |

Re: 1979 Marathon Electric Motor Options
Well I just order a new brake setup and cables for my current rear end. I think I'd like to make what I've got now work because of the money I've already got in it. I've got emails out to EMP and PQ. If I can't find a good option I guess I'll decide then. Still open for other solutions. I guess if I can find a 96 rear-end and motor for a good price I'd be ahead.
Thanks, Brandon |
