87 Electric EZ-Go and Lestronic II
Hi,
I have an 87 electric EZ-GO that I am trying to charge for the first time. As per my intro post, I purchased the cart from my father-in-law and have no idea the age of the batteries or their charge level. I do not have a volt meter to test them so I am just trying to use the Lestronic II charger that I got with it to charge them. While plugged in the Lestronic hums and clicks but I do not see any readings on its internal meter. I have cleaned and tightened all the connections, checked the fluid levels, and the cart will move in forward and reverse, but I am not sure that it is charging. Is this a case of the batteries not being charged enough to be charged by the charger? Thanks for any help and sorry for the long post!!! PHINMAN |

You cannot even begin to troubleshoot this cart without a $20 digital multimeter. On sparkies it's all about voltage.

Re: 87 Electric EZ-Go and Lestronic II
Sorry for the late post!! I was able to get my volt meter on the system and it tested out at 37.4 volts. When I tested the amps, I must have had something set wrong as it sparked and melted one of the leads on my meter. Anyway, I think the batteries are fine, it might just be that I have to have the charger checked to see if it is working properly. I will just take it to one of the local electricians to have it tested.
Thanks for the help!! PHINMAN |

Re: 87 Electric EZ-Go and Lestronic II
You cannot test DC amps on a golf cart with a $20 meter. It's now wonder you melted a probe. You may have put 200+ amps through a wire rated for .5 amps.

I had the charger check and everything was fine. It turned out to be a bad connection in the socket on the cart. I was able to fix that and it charged fine. Thanks for the help.

Glad we could help and that the cart is charging..... recharge when the pack drops to about 36.72 volts. That is 50% . Never go below this and they will give good service. P.S. Sorry but you are gonna need a new Meter

Re: 87 Electric EZ-Go and Lestronic II
Happy to hear your cart is now charging. Sorry about your meter lead getting fried. Gornoman is right, you can't test current on a cart with a "cheapo" multimeter. My meter is only capable of measuring 10 amps max (for 30 secs).I looked it up in the manual after reading your post. You hopefully saved me from making the same mistake. I am interested in what you found in the socket connection. I assume you are referring to the socket you plug the charger into on the cart? Did you have a bad or missing lug, a broken wire, corrosion?

Re: 87 Electric EZ-Go and Lestronic II
The lug was pushed in slightly and was not making contact. I would not have known if I had not pulled the connection out and tried to adjust the wires.
