Default RXV moves very slow

I dont have much experience with the RXV and my neighbor has an 09. It drives very slow in F and R. Where should I start with this cart? One weird thing happened when I rocked the cart back and forth it worked fine for a while until we stopped and then it went back to slow mode again.

Check the E Brake and be sure it's not installed to tight.

It sounds like an issue with the motor speed encoder. In a 2009, it'll likely be a bearing style speed encoder. They have a limited usable life and when they fail the controller gets no speed signal from the motor so it cuts the motor back to 'limp home mode' and it'll go real slow.

The motor has an arm like bracket coming off the side where most 48V have speed sensors. Is there a way to verify its the speed encoder? The 2002+ club cars you can push and the regen feature kicks in to brake the motor, is there a similar test with the RXV? Thanks

The RXV is a bit different, it is an AC motor instead of a DC motor. The AC motor uses a multi-channel encoder that measures motor speed and direction. The brake assembly mounts at the rear of the motor. It sounds like the cart may have the old style motor brake with the lever. There is a temperature sensor as well, but that is imbedded into the motor windings and is not easy to change. It requires someone experienced with repairing winding related issues to replace the temperature sensor.

The motor speed encoder is at the front end of the motor, the end that is bolted to the differential housing. In the older RXV motor, the speed encoder is incorporated into the front motor bearing assembly, so that bearing assembly must be replaced in order to replace the encoder, and it is very easy to damage it. In the newer RXV motor, the speed encoder mounts at the top front, over the front bearing and it can be changed much easier. Both sensor types are powered by 5 volts from the controller.

The motor brake is seperate from the regen braking system. If the motor brake fails open or closed, you will be totally unable to move the cart. It does a hard shutdown of the cart before you even get started.
