New Family member! And I'm ready to learn what to modify! :)
Howdy all! New family member. I've never owned a golf cart but bought my first today, and I intend to play.
It's a 1986 electric EZ GO 36 volt. And that's about all I know about the details. It seems to run fine, no problems, zips around great. It's had a lift kit, big wheels and tires added, but other than that it appears to be stock. I would guess it's current top speed around 9-10mph. That is one of the first things I'd like to figure out what I need to do to upgrade hardware and allow it to be faster. I have a decent sized budget, so as long as it isn't something crazy, I'm in. I'm also excited to hear about any other suggested modifications I should consider. Couple questions: It has a winch and a 12v light system on it and the wires coming out the rear to be attached to a separate 12volt battery. I'd like to omit that, and buy a transformer of some type to run the lights and winch from the existing batteries. I've seen them on the Internet, but not sure how much juice it needs to be able to provide for the winch, or if there are 'good and bad' ones. Also, the guy I bought it from said it used to be used for hunting, but other than getting unstuck, I can't see what other use the winch would have. And if you got a deer, are these things really able to get a heavy animal back to camp? Thanks for your advice all! (I tried posting a pic, but it says it won't let me until I've been a member for 7 days.) I'll try to post the basics and just modify the url to see: postimg.org/image/g3c6wz29b/ |

Bret.....your cart has already been lifted and has larger tires on it....that in itself is placing a larger load on the drive system than its intended for. I would be willing to bet your cart has a SERIES drive system. To make your cart reliable and do what you need/want it to do, AND go faster in the process. You will need to upgrade the entire drive system. Controller (either a 400 or 500 amp), HD F&R switch, SD Solenoid, either 4 or 2 ga. cable set to match the controller (all cables). That's the drive system....now it will handle the load. IF you want it to go faster, you will need to get a different Motor to meet your needs. IF you are replacing the batteries in this process....considering going to a 48v setup which will automatically get you roughly 33% more speed/torque. if you go that route....a new charger will also be needed.
WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF CART OWNERSHIP!!! lol OH and btw.....Congrats on the new ride and Welcome to our happy little corner of the net, and to BGW. There is a BIG fridge on the back porch with anything you can think of in it...help yourself...of course only take what you can LEGALLY have. Make yourself at home on one of the big fluffy couches, kick your shoes off, put your feet up on one of the tables, yes we are allowed to do that, mom's, wives’, husbands, girlfriend’s and boyfriends here don't care....and take it easy. oh...btw....every once in a while a food fight breaks out...so you may not want to wear nice clothes here. Welcome!! |

Thank you for the response! Yes, I've been scouring the site, and so far, I think my best option is one of the ScottyB systems with a 48volt battery setup. I know this will never be worth anything compared to what it will cost, but that isn't why I'm doing it. I want to learn, and have a cool long term toy on the homestead while playing.

While these projects are often not "cost-effective" when looking at resale value, knowing the operations inside and out, plus having just what you want, adds value in your situation. Build it!

Thanks again all!
By the way, any thoughts on if I can run my winch and lights off the 36v battery bank or is it better to use a standalone 12v? I don't intend on using them much, but not sure if the winch would overload the transformer I'm looking at. I don't have any specs on it though I may try to pull it off and see if I can identify brand and size. |

as far as the winch.....you are better off with the stand alone dedicated battery. as for your lights.....either run them off of the stand alone battery OR get a DC to DC converter to run the lights. DON'T run the lights off of the pack.....

Okay, I'll get a 12volt mounted in the back then. So I'll need to somehow integrate a 12v charger as well.
I'm hoping to maybe integrate the 36v charger into the back next to the 12v battery. But are the chargers durable enough to get some jolting from driving across my pasture? I won't be rock crawling or anything, but they get get some bouncing when I'm running the dogs. |

IMHO....for mounting your 36v charger....I personally wouldn't, just to many little pieces/parts that over time can vibrate/come loose. |
