Default 5 AMP Battery Chargers

Has anyone used the lower price battery chargers? If you look on Amazon, there are several 36v/5amp chargers. It looks like they will charge in 4 to 6 hours, so for the non-golfer this may be fine.

I would think a 5 amp rated charger would almost qualify as a maintenance/trickle charger. Would take a whole lot longer than 6 hours to recharge if you use the cart much at all. 5 amps x 6 hours = 30 ah? Not much for a golf cart. I'd also be wary trusting the investment in a set of batteries to a "cheapest thing I can find" kind of charger. Just my 2 cents worth...

5 amp chargers you see are for small capacity batteries as used on electric bicycles and such.
A lead acid battery needs close to 10% of it's amp hour capacity in the initial bulk charge. A 180 - 200 amp hour battery (typical golf cart) needs 18 to 20 amps for bulk replenishing. Failure to provide a high enough charge rate will leave the heavy metals on the bottom of the cells. This failure to remix will result in stratification and shortened useful life of the battery.

In short - don't do it. The money you save will cost you dearly

You get what you pay for. many come into the shop, get sticker shock what a $250/$300 DPI costs, goes online, think its the same thing when its not, then call when their car isn't charging or running. Get the correct charger for the job, don't just shop based on price, you'll be disappointed.
