Default EZGO 2FIVE rattle when coasting

I just purchased a 2013 2FIVE with 800 miles on it. The car works great, but I hear a slight rattle in motor/gearbox while coasting at high speed. It stops if I touch the breaks or accelerate again. Is this normal?

I called EZGO support and they said I should try to "change the oil in differential and apply anti seize to the motor shaft and motor coupler".

Does that make sense? How big of a job is that? Any DIY instructions available?

Thanks!

Kevin

I'm still troubleshooting this rattle. The repair manual instructions for changing the oil in the rear axle are a bit confusing (see attachments). It says the oil pan must to be removed, yet it makes no mention of the drain plug - which is surprisingly just a rubber plug! The plug is also not at the lowest point of the gearbox, so I'm not sure how it would work.

Do I really need to remove the whole oil pan, or should I use the drain plug? Perhaps I can lift the right side wheel so the oil flows to the plug...

You have to remove the pan to clean out the gear shavings.

Also, verify there is a spline bumper installed. https://shop.ezgo.com/products/Spline-Bumper.html
It is a small cylindrical piece of rubber that fits inside the spline coupler on the motor. When motor is mounted, it is compress between the motor shaft an input gear shaft to take up any end play that exists to avoid chattering.

By the way, do you think this gear oil is suitable (link below)? I cant seem to find the recommended Mobile 424 Gear Oil. Any other suggestions? Should I use something more viscous to reduce the gear noise?

Do you have a update, did it solve the rattling problem? I have a 2010 that seems to have the same issue.

Since new, my 2017 2Five has that same faint rattle, also only when coasting and no load on the drive train. The rattle hasn’t changed in 16 months and 500+ miles. It bothered me initially and I found suggestions here ranging from “that’s how RXV’s/2Fives sound” to more specific fixes such as JohnieB’s. My wife and other passengers never seem to notice so I’ve decided (head in the sand perhaps) to join them and accept the sound as “general driveline noise”. If it changes or gets noisier I’ll address it, but for now it’s happy cruising...once it warms up here.
