2001 EZ Go aux battery
Hey guys,
Just picked up my cart yesterday and I can already tell that I don't like how the previous owner has the headlights and other accessories hooked up. I was thinking about going with an aux 12v battery dedicated to the accessories. I Picked up a float charger from HF and thinking of ways to hide it and plug it in when needed. Anyone else using this setup? I've done several searches but I haven't been able to find any examples of it. Any help is greatly appreciated |

Re: 2001 EZ Go aux battery
I did this a few years ago. Moved the carts 12v system to a separate battery. The first battery I used was a lawn mower battery. As predicted by this forum it only lasted a year. Next I used a glass mat power chair battery. This is a deep cycle battery. No maintenance. A little bigger but still only weighs about 20lbs. It's starting it's fifth year with no issues. Charge it with cheap charger with a quick disconnect.
Powers the lights and a small sound system. You can see it on the right side of the picture. It is held down by a cheap standard battery hold down from an auto parts store. I didn't even have to drill a hole. Depending on what you want to do a battery like this may not have enough capacity for you. There is room in the cart for a marine type deep cycle battery if you need it. Don't waste your time with any sort of "starting" battery. |

That should work fine. I'm a little (lot) anal, and switch both + and - by using DPST or in some cases DPDT switches.

I don't have one, but the only difference between a SPST and a DPST switch is it makes and breaks both + and -.

Re: 2001 EZ Go aux battery
Ok. Do you have any suggestions as to what items I need to purchase? Me and the fam are spending the weekend in Gatlinburg TN and will be heading home tomorrow and I look to getting started pretty soon. Also would this work to charge and maintain the separate 12v battery?

Re: 2001 EZ Go aux battery
I bought my DPDT switches at a local electronics store, but you really can get by with a SPST or DPST switch. I often repurpose my switches, so just bought DPDT. One example is I was given an old '50s model Andy Griffith style siren. I use the switch to toggle between a standard horn and the siren, when pressing my floor switch.
S is single, D is double, and T is throw. I have a DPDT three position for my headlights. Up is on with tail lights, middle position is off, down is headlights on a dimmer, with tail lights off, for use when approaching friends or a bon fire at the lake, so I don't blind people. I have my rechargeable flashlight and 12 volt power outlet (like a cigarette lighter) always on. The other accessories - radio, dome light, Alltrax Exray, head and tail lights, wig-wags, ammeter tied to a three position key switch, so I have off, power to the buggy, and power to the buggy and all accessories. I charge my 12 volt battery via the power outlet. I have a 12 position switch tied to each battery, so I can monitor pack voltage and each of eight individual batteries. I have my dash off, as I'm planning on adding my 12 volt battery, so I can monitor that. |
