Default 2006 ezgo txt speed controller

i have a stock 2006 ezgo txt and i would like to get it to faster. its current top speed is 18 mph. i have figured out that it is the speed controller that is preventing the cart to go over 18 mph. i was wanting to know more about speed controllers and if it is possible to disable them or take them out to get the golfcart to go faster.

A controller only affects amperage. To go faster, you need larger tires, faster gears, a faster motor, or more voltage. A controller will help with all of the above, but won't do anything besides giving you less slow down up hills.

More or less, amperage = torque and voltage = speed.

Go here for a good explanation on upgrades:

If you have a PDS cart you can install the freedom speed chip, which will probably get you another 3-4 mph. Other than that Yurtle is right on target.

The stock controller limits speed in the sepex models so we need to know which drive system you have before we can answer your question. In 2006 Ezgo made Series and PDS drive carts.

In your other thread, http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/elect...txt-speed.html we pretty well established you have a cart with a PDS drive system, which has a SepEx (Separatly Exicted) motor.

What yurtle said applies 100% to cart with series wound motors, but only about 99% to carts with SepEx motors. Replacing the stock controller can increase the speed of a cart with a SepEx motor and in some instances, changing the field mapping can increase speed. Also, if the motor has a speed sensor that sends RPM data to the controller, changing the magnetic disk attached to the motor shaft to one with fewer pairs of poles can increase the speed.

----------
The output of the controller is PWM (Pulse Width Modulated) DC whose duty-cycle is varied from 0% to 100% by the throttle input to the controller.

The is accomplished by a dozen or so MOSFETs (metal–oxide–semiconductor field-effect transistor) in parallel that are switched on and off about 18,000 times a second. How long they stay ON vs how long they stay OFF is the duty-cycle.

A controller for a SepEx motor is actually three controllers in one box, one high current and two low current. The high current one feeds amps to the Armature while one of the two low current ones feeds amps to the field windings. (One is for Forward and one is for Reverse - only one low current output is active at a time)

You can eliminate the controller with a series wound motor. It is dangerous, but doable. The early EZGO carts did not have controllers, they had resistors the were placed in series with the motor to reduce the voltage applied to the motor, thereby reducing speed.

But it is next to impossible to do with a SepEx motor since the Field and Armature windings are separately excited. More correctly, it is doable, but the results are dismal as well as dangerous. Without field mapping, the cart will either have a high top speed with poor acceleration or good acceleration with poor top speed. (Field mapping effectively changes the motor from high-torque to high-speed on the fly.)

------------
If you are satisfied with your cart's performance other than the top speed, replacing the magnet disk with one having fewer poles would be the least expensive way to get more speed. By sending false information to the controller (Four pulses per shaft rotation rather than eight), a stock PDS motor will max out at about 5600 RPM with a 36V battery pack, if the rest of the electrical system is in perfect condition, which is about 24 MPH.

Lol - JohnnieB thank you for breaking down the big bang theory of electronic speed control.

That was just the 5-cent tour.

Once you figure it out, nothing is complicated. If it is, you just haven't figured it out yet.
