Default RXV Battery Meter

So I have the factory F -> E meter for an RXV that has the built in connector, but I would prefer a digital readout connected inline with the batteries separate from all the other RXV wiring. If I do this, there is no way to wire the digital meter into the keyswitch without (as I understand it from others) detrimental results to the RXV system. Can I mount a standard toggle switch in line with the digital meter from Scotty B that would allow me to shut the meter off when the cart is not in use? I have seen a couple threads on this, but didn't see an answer to that specific question.

Thanks!
Kyle

You can wire the "Keyswitch " wire to the switched power lug on main soleniod to get the same effect as wiring to rxv keyswith. There is a picture of the correct lug on here somewhere. Try using google to search instead of the internal search function. I would wait for an RXV guy to get a detailed explanation. Bob Boyce usually gets the RXV questions but there are others.

You could wire a toggle switch in line to turn it off manually.
Mine are wired directly to the batteries and not switched. Always on. Your choice.

Different people like to do it different ways. The best of course is direct wiring the digital voltmeter to the battery pack + and - and just leave it always on. You may be able to trim some plastic and mount the voltmeter in the front center (unused F/N/R) hole of the rear body, facing the dash.

I prefer to mount it in the dash and wire the - to battery pack - and the + to a wire that runs to the switched side of the main solenoid, the terminal lug that is connected to the controller B+ terminal. That way it turns on and off with the key, and you can see from the voltmeter whether or not there is any issue with the solenoid passing power to the controller.

The digital voltmeter I have fits perfectly into the dash hole that the former headlight rocker switch was installed in. I bought a couple of those digitalvoltmeters from Scottyb at http://www.cartsunlimited.net/battery-meters.html

So bob no matter if you hook just to the red and black wires on the plug were the SOC goes you'll fry the computer ?

I responded in the other thread. Just probing the SOC socket to measure the voltages will give you a very high risk of frying everything on the 5V bus in the cart. It is one of the most often made mistakes with the RXV by those that want to install an indash voltmeter.

Thanks for the info - I appreciate all these forums have to offer!

If I run it to the terminal lug on the B+ terminal, am I running any risk of frying the controller? I would prefer it to turn off with the keyswitch, but certainly not at the expense of a controller replacement. I have the diagram attached - are you attaching to the 'Red Wire from Solenoid to Controller B+' on the same terminal lug as the 'Wire to Resistor'?

Not knowing what year your RXV is, that limits what I can suggest. It also depends on the voltmeter that you intend to use. The simple 2 wire voltmeter from Carts Unlimited is the simplest. By connecting voltmeter + to the controller B+, you get to see voltage drop to the + side of the controller. You can even hook voltmeter - to controller B- to see the additional voltage drop on the - side of the controller. You turn on the key and do not press the go pedal to see unloaded voltage. Then as you drive you can watch loaded battery voltage that the controller is getting. That can be very important for future troubleshooting.

As for damaging your controller, flip the run/tow switch to tow and leave your key off while you attach the meter wires, then flip it back to run when finished. That safes your controller.

Thanks again Bob - I ordered the 2 wire voltmeter from ScottyB and he had it shipped out in less than 30 minutes. I should get it later this week/early next week and will get it installed.
