Default EzGo 2-Five parking brake problem

I have an 2016 EzGo 2-Five. Problem is parking brake coming on by itself while the cart is being driven. Emergency procedure shown in battery compartment releases brake. This has happened twice. Any ideas?

Bad battery, loose connection at controller plug, bad encoder, corrosion in harness are places known to cause this. This vehicle should be under warranty & I strongly suggest you let them handle it while under warranty (tampering can void warranty). Buying parts to replace that you can't test first can get expensive. Got an oscilloscope?

Does the cart come to a screeching halt, or just slow down? Could it just be the regererative breaking?

We had some older RXVs do this to us before with bad encoder bearings. Do the newer RXV have encoder bearing?

Newer ones have an encoder that is separate from the bearing (much much easier to change), unfortunately, the wire harness is stretched rubber band tight. Causing problems with the encoder wires at the sensor itself.

Cheap o-scope that can test encoder is available, & here's what you should see. It will only look different during the failure, so you still have to replicate the failure.

The 2Five has the motor brake wired quite different from the RXV. There is no brake switch at the brake pedal and no wiring to support one. In the 2014+ 2Fives, all splices are well sealed, unlike the earlier harnesses. By the time the 2Five went into production in 2010, bearing encoders were no longer in use. So unless someone swapped out their 2Five motor for an earlier year RXV motor...

I agree with cgtech that it COULD be an intermittent connection at the motor speed sensor. But typically that would cause a sudden slow-down rather than a motor brake lockup, since it would be after the powerup self test had been passed. The newer harnesses are definitely a bit shorter, like they are trying to save a few inches of wire per harness. I have 2 brand new 2016 2Five wiring harnesses and a side by side comparison with an earlier harness does show this.

The 2Five also has the run plug under the cupholder, so I would check to be sure that it is making good connection. E-Z-GO uses the cheapest tin-plated terminals, not the more expensive gold or beryllium copper plated terminals. In humid environments, these terminals can corrode. Unplug and replug the run plug several times to wipe those connections.

The only other connections in the motor brake circuit are the controller plug, both main harness fuses, the 2 brake bypass plugs/sockets, the key switch, and the motor brake connector itself. I would unplug/replug all of these a few times each to wipe the connections. None of these tests would violate the terms of warranty.

If none of that works out, it's time to get a diagnostic code readout to see if there are stored trouble codes. tncllc, where are you located?

Dealer shop is working on it. I think they found a battery problem. We are down here in Puerto Vallarta and my scope is back in the states. Is the encoder optical or magnetic?

Just slows down (significantly) and starts major battery drain. No longer coasts freely under this condition.

If the parking brake is only partially on, and it is an encoder problem, what do you think the waveform would look like? No activity?
