Default Purchase help needed, Hilly Neighborhood, Heavy riders....

Hope this is the correct sub for this question.

We are looking to buy a cart for our neighborhood and camping and I have a few newbie questions.

We previously had a 98 ezgo and i liked it well enough to narrow my search to the EZ go brand again.

We are looking to get something in the 4-5k max range and before i shell out the $$$ I need to make sure it will work for our needs.

We live in a hilly subdivision and camp in hilly areas so I need something that will have the power to climb the hills as well as safely descend the hills.

My concerns are, all the cart shops like to put larger tires on the carts, while I understand the bigger tires look good I know they require more torque to turn, as well as power to stop. I think small tires would be better for hill climbing with the understanding that we would loose top end speed which is fine by me. However I was looking at disk brakes to better the stopping power but they require bigger rims..

Should i be looking at a regular cart for my needs or would I be better served with a factory street legal cart or even a gem car?

Total loaded weight with myself and family would be 600 lbs, (Wife and i are big boned... lol)

So to recap: Need hill climbing and hill stopping power, not looking for top speed, weight load capacity 600 lbs and electric power, not gas.

Also extremely handy and mechanically inclined so anything I need to modify or add I can do from welding to fabrication etc...

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

E-Z-GO makes a 2Five, which is a street legal (Neighborhood Electric Vehicle) version of the RXV. Good torque, 25 MPH in street (Rabbit) mode, 14 MPH in golf (Turtle) mode, 4 wheel disc brakes, speedometer, ect. You may find a used one in your price range. They range from 2010 to current year, though I recommend a 2013 or later. They have a bit more power.

I have worked on and with both the 2Fives and the RXVs.

I like my 2Five and it sounds like it would fit your need perfect. The brakes are very strong and has good hill climbing power.
Its a relatively expensive carts ($10,000 new) and rare cart but I see them on Craigslist from time to time for $5,000 and and up.

Use a Craigslist search engine like searchTempest to search all of Craigslist

Weight load with hilly streets is a good enough reason to go four wheel disc when the payload your carrying is family

AND as long as you are going to be using it on the street or around a camp grounds roads (not truly off road) there is No NEED to get larger tires.

2-five is sure is a good choice but it does come with a big price tag. I drived both, 2-five and RXV the 2-five is sure is faster but really feel the same for torque and acceleration. I think RXV with a jake's hydraulic front disk brake is your way to go if you want to save a few bucks. I currently own a 2010 RXV with 23 tire and the jake brake kit,, it goes to 23mph easily and braking is not an issue.... julien

This is also a excellent option if you don't mind modifying an rxv with brakes. . Front disc brakes should be all you need as rear discs typically don't do much work (20%??) in a four disc setup.

Without a disc brake upgrade, 23 tires on an RXV reduces the effectiveness of the regen braking. It also reduces torque for hill climbing. Depening upon the OPs location, he may be forced to stick with the stock tire size. I know where I live, it can not only be dangerous, but downright deadly, to reduce the effectiveness of the brakes. We have grades that can well exceed the designed operational parameters of golf carts. Engineers may know the difference when you are exceeding same limits. Many cart owners do not. Any time that family safety is involved, please use good judgement. I like the RXVs, but when it comes to family safety, you cannot beat 4 wheel disc brakes of the 2Five. That was why I did not recommend an RXV. Of course, you can put the 2Five hydraulic brakes on an RXV, but that is beyond the ability of most shadetree mechanics. New 2Five rear axle tubes with the caliper mounts, new 2Five front spindles with the caliper mounts, 4 new 2Five hubs, and all of the rest of the brake parts. It would be very expensive just to buy the parts. More cost to buy an RXV and the parts than you could pick up a used 2Five for.

Another option is the TXT48 with an Ausco rear disc set up. This cart with Alltrax 400 control installed has plenty of poop and is readily available for a lot less $.

Agreed with Scotty B. A lot of our customers in the same local (campground) have this set up and have great luck with it. We would recommend it.
