48 Volt Solenoid hookup Help
I know this has been discussed on here before but after doing a search I can't find exact help for my situation.
I have a 2001 EZGO TXT 36v and I'm upgrading to 48v. I bought 4 - 12v Trogan's. I don't see anyone discussing 4 - 12 volt batteries. Is this not something that is done? Also, I have found talk of Scottyb and his site. Looked through his site and tons of help there. I'm worried the 48 volt solenoid I bought from battery source won't suffice. They didn't sell me the resisters I see on the old one. Can I reuse the one's from the old solenoid? Plus how does this new one wire up? My old one looks a bit different. Pics attached. Also, I have been told by a friend of mine that my controller might be able to handle the 48 volts. Was gonna try it and see what happens. Worse case it doesn't work and I have to buy a new one... right? I don't do anything crazy. Tool around the neighborhood with the kids. Light dirt road riding. Thanks for any assistance guys. |

Re: 48 Volt Solenoid hookup Help
6 X 8volt batts are better than 4 x12v batts for power & life
But you got 4 X 12 , unless you can swap/refund them , it'll work Most of the guys with 4 X 12 have plans to eventually go to 6 X 8 |

Re: 48 Volt Solenoid hookup Help
Thanks Golderdave. I was just reading a post about that. I haven't received the batteries yet so I should be able to cancel and go with the 6 - 8v batteries. I'm gonna call in the morning and make that switch.

Re: 48 Volt Solenoid hookup Help
Solenoid should work ok too
Pre charge resistor & diode will work, Keep diode polarity the same, white band on the + side on small terminals Keep us updated with pics as you go Curious how the controller works out, some are able to go 36 or 48 volt |

Re: 48 Volt Solenoid hookup Help
the controller will NOT work....and you hook it up? sure, but it won't last very long if it even moves and the "magic smoke" will be released from it.
looking at the solenoid you have there.....it must be only a 200 amp. before you buy anything else.... go to the cartsunlimited.net site (scottyb's shop) and look around. you are going to need a lot more stuff for your cart to have much of a life span. |

Re: 48 Volt Solenoid hookup Help
I did check out Scottyb's site sir nuke. That's what had me thinking I needed more help here. How do you know the controller won't work?
Golferdave, so the new solenoid doesn't have any labels on it?? I can't find a positive or negative anywhere. |

Re: 48 Volt Solenoid hookup Help
Then it Don't matter
Keep the red wires together & the black wires together & the diode band to the same wires its on now (can't tell , but guessing band side with red wires) Am also guessing you'll need some stuff to get up & running with 48 volts, Usually minimum is solenoid & controller |

Re: 48 Volt Solenoid hookup Help
You have some options
1) buy a stock 48v controller(new) 2)buy a stock 48v controller(used-here or eBay) 3)buy a aftermarket controller(new) 4) buy aftermarket controller(used) If you choose options 3 or 4 you will need to upgrade all the wiring in the cart Depending on the size of the controller you choose in options 3 or 4 will determine the size of the wiring but since you are going 48v it will most likely be good with 4 gauge since it's a stock motor. I'm sure someone else will be able to double confirm that Reasons to get options 3 or 4 You already have to get a controller might as well add a little more and get a aftermarket one that will increase acceleration and max speed They are programmable if you have a laptop Life is more fun with one But hands down make sure you can cancel that order of 4-12v batteries and switch to 6-8vs I would do a little search one which 8v to get before you pick just any battery I believe there's a sticky at the top of this forum with battery info. |
