Standard drum brakes
Should the standard drum brakes on an ezgo be able to lock up the wheels to stop the cart?
I have never driven a new ezgo so don't know what the stopping capabilities should be. Trying to figure out how good or bad my brakes are. Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk |

Re: Standard drum brakes
With stock tires fully aired up on wet pavement or dirt road, yes.

Re: Standard drum brakes
Yes. It's all about friction. If the cart has been sitting for a while there can be surface rust inside the drums that keeps the lining on the shoes from making good contact. Most often it's the stuck self adjusters. It leaves you with just a tiny contact patch at the end of each brake shoe instead of the whole curvature of the shoe making contact.

Re: Standard drum brakes
A 5 year old should be able to stop the cart. Most places have a difficult time adjusting EZGO brakes. The biggest thing is don't adjust the brakes at the cable. Rarely do the cables need to be adjusted. You should be able to lock up the brakes on dry pavement no problem. Also the hill brake should pop off gently.....and you shouldn't have to do a leg press to get the hill brake to lock.

Re: Standard drum brakes
I have had this cart for a year.
I have added new controller, new motor...and 20 inch tires. It just seems like it is taking longer to stop the cart. You can't get the brakes to lock up the wheels in dry pavement. Thx Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk |

Re: Standard drum brakes
Does it sound like I need new shoes or take apart and adjust?

Re: Standard drum brakes
Most likely just "clean & adjust". Brake shoes on a cart last a LONG time - just not that much weight & relatively low speeds.

Re: Standard drum brakes
Take apart and clean really well. I have been successful doing this several times without having to buy new shoes. Once cleaned and put back together, remember to pump the brakes while driving to self-adjust. The whole process is pretty simple.
