Are you grounding it to the body. Thats how I screwed up my wireing. This is how I did mine, I ran the hot wire to the batery that the key switch goes to, positive side then my ground wire went to the negitive side on the battery thats next to it by your grab handle on the drivers side. Hope this helps.

Hello rbobsdog73 and Welcome to the forum. If your wire is very small, it will melt the insulation off due to the heavy current draw.

All of the 12v accessories on an electric are a 2 wire set up. The body is not used for a ground. So a ground (or negative) wire is run from your power source to the first light and then the next light until all the lights are grounded. The hot (or positive) runs the same way. It is simply interrupted by a key and toggle switch before it gets from the source to the first light..... hope this helps? What is getting hot the lights or the wires? Have you checked the voltage you are running? Is it correct for the lights? Heat in a wire is usually the product of restriction as in too small a wire for the draw?

Have you checked the voltage at the switch? Are you certain it is 12v only? If so no way around this answer. Either the switch is not rated for the amperage or the wire? How hot is hot ?
