I would suggest going with a gear oil in the range of 80-w90, just to help keep noise low. Even thicker oil is on the list as the Temps increase. That axle has seen a big variety of recommendations as thin as 30 weight (and even stuff called "tractor fluid", it's real thin). But I like the traditional "gear lube" thicker stuff. In a Rxv (which has positraction), or a internal brake "team" axle Yamaha, friction modifier is required. Your axle won't require a "friction modified" oil. To make it simple, I suggest a GL-5 oil. Royal purple meant for for axles would be dandy.

how much fluid does that rear axle take? Any handy tips to help change it out, have been meaning to do for a while now, probably original on a 97.

There's no exact quantity of oil needed - tehcnically you remove the drain plug and just refill until it starts pouring out.

I like to remove the entire lower pan, remove gasket, clean the pan, re-apply gasket, and re-fill the lower pan with oil half way up the drain screw at least - before re-installing the pan.

The factory used only Silicone sealant, no gasket.
