Default EZGO RXV charger

What is the absolute best charger for the RXV? Is the better amperage, the better charger? Not sure if it makes a difference in the charger, it eventually I will convert over to 6-8 volt batteries. I know sometimes the charger has to fit to the batteries.

The charger always has to match the battery pack voltage, but there is considerable leeway on what constitutes a match in the amps department.

Higher amps means a faster charge, which may or may not be a good thing and there are limits as to how many amps the batteries can tolerate during charge. Typically about 13% or less of the AH capacity at the 20Hr rate is the max charging amps recommended for lead-acid, wet-cell, deep-cycle batteries.

12V golf cart batteries typically have a 150AH capacity while 8V batteries are typically 170AH and can be as high as 205AH, so a charge the puts out less than 20A will be okay for both. The 8V batteries will just take a bit longer to charge, but still will charge within 6-8 hours when discharged down to 50%.

In my opinion, the best charge for any cart is the DPI Accusense: http://www.cartsunlimited.net/chargers-36-48v.html

Thank you for your response. I just got a cart that came with a schauer jac1548h charger for my ez go rxv. I have never heard of this charger and only familiar with the standard powertron Q. So, I am a little concerned about this charger.

Schauer chargers such as the JAC1548 are more commonly seen connected to scissor lifts and small forklifts than golf carts, but it ought to work okay charging a RXV battery pack.

The major difference I see between it and a DPI is that it uses a switch-mode power supply to feed the charger circuitry while the DPI uses a transformer, which is far more reliable.

So the DPI is better than the Lester? I think I'm going to sell this Schauer and get either the DPI or the Lester

Technically, the DPI and Lester are more or less peers. Or at least to the extent they both have a stepdown transformer input and a microprocessor controlled SCR output, but the bells and whistles may be a bit different.

Float charging after the regular charge cycle ends might be optional for the Lester and standard with the DPI.

The DPI has user selectable charge profiles for different brand batteries and it appears that the profiles are factory loaded in the Lester. I'm not sure what has to be done with the Lester if you change battery brands.

The max output amp rating for the DPI is 17A while it's 13A for the Lester, so charging time needed will be a bit less using the DPI.

Personally, I'm partial to the DPI because I've used both the 36V and 42V versions and they have performed flawlessly for years.

All depends on which Lester. Most are step-down transformer type. But they also make High frequency "Switch mode transformer" type now too.

Would you go with Lester or DPI?
