Transaxel oil weight question
Why is it that the trans axle on a electric cart calls for lighter weight oil than one on a gas cart. Are they not the basically the same trans axle?

Re: Transaxel oil weight question
They are basically the same to the extent they reduce a higher RPM at the motor to a lower RPM at the axle.
According to their respective service manuals, both gas and electric versions of TXT carts come from the factory with SAE-30 motor oil in the transaxle (commonly referred to as a differential on this forum). I'm not 100% sure, but I believe Marathon and Medalist carts were the same. The electric RXV has a limited slip differential and uses a hydraulic fluid (Mobile 424) and I suspect the gas version does also. The viscosity of motor oil and gear oil are measured on different scales, so if someone is using gear oil, it will have a higher SAE number. Attached a chart showing the relative viscosity vs the SAE numbers. Personally, I prefer to lubricate gears with gear oil rather than motor oil and I'm using Lucas 85W-140 gear oil at present. Next time I change the oil, I'm' going to Lucas 75W-90 synthetic gear oil. |
