Default If it ain't one thing its another

I have a EZGO 36 volt PDS stock, I added a ScottyB's DVM with the nice Stainless plate. Sunday we had a wind storm that did something to the power company's delivery and we had a series of 18 power outages with only a few seconds of down time between the outages, on the last outage it finally lasted 2 hours before they finally got it fixed. My DVM was showing erratic readings with what looks like the display 'lost' the first digit from the left. I rewired the
DVM and found a shorted wire, the 20 gage red one off the meter. After rewiring it still has the same problem. I assume that means a new meter from Scotty. I have a DPI charger which seemed to come through with flying colors. The DVM is wired direct to the battery pack.

My question to the group is, could the power surges through the DPI have done this? Would rewiring the meter thru the voltage reducer have helped prevent this? I like the always on wiring route but may need to come thru the reducer which is shut off when the key is off.

The meter from scottyb needs full pack voltage, not the reducer. (If you got the same "2-wire" meter I got).

It may be a coincidence, but I always unplug my DPI and ALL expensive electronics whenever we have storms that cause outages or blinks. I've noticed my incandescent lights sometimes get brighter for an instant, so surges are a real possibility. However, I'm not sure if that would go through your DPI without damaging it.

I power all my expensive electronic stuff through UPS systems that switch to battery when the AC power becomes erratic, but not the DPI chargers.

The stepdown transformer input more or less blocks voltage spikes on the AC line from going any further. Of course a nearby lightening strike on the AC power lines will take out just about anything.

I agree, the meter failure is likely to be coincidental to the power problems.
