Need advice - S4, TXT or RXV
I would like some advice on a 48v. Which direction I should go with a build, or do I buy a S4 HO and call it a day.
If I buy a S4 HO my needs are basically met, but I am concerned about overall top speed. I am also on the way upper end of my budget, so that is when a build came into play. What are the pros and cons to getting a used TXT or RXV. If I went TXT I would think I need a new speed controller to increase the torque for the bigger wheels and the hilly conditions. I have seen some controllers that are adjustable is this a good option? If I went with the RXV it appears I gain more top speed of the bat, but the torque is not there. My options on speed controllers for an RXV seem limited, but I might be looking in the wrong place. Are there other items I need to replace to get the most out of these motors? Thanks for input! MJ |

1. ^^^ the question above^^^ what do you consider "maintaining a decent amount of speed" ?? MPH wise..... 2. Considering the use of your cart, as you have detailed in you OP, you need to ensure you are looking at and picking a SERIES drive TXT. The series drive system is considered the "work horse" of the Ez-Go golf carts and will be able to creep through the woods when required, where as the sepex system isn't really designed for that type of service. 3. To build a totally reliable Series Drive (considering you will be going to remote locations) you will need to upgrade the entire drive system....CONTROLLER, SD SOLENOID, HIGH CURRENT CABLES, HD F&R SWITCH or Super Duty Reversing Contactor. possibly a new motor, depending what speed you want to attain.....AND 4. Consider converting from 36v to a 48v set-up. |

They haven't made any series carts since 2008 or 09. May be hard to find a good one.
What about this: http://www.ezgo.com/Portals/3/EZGO/P...-20-203057-020 72v and AC (brushless) motor. Would certainly do everything you want. Don't know how it's pricing compared to the S4HO. |

Re: Need advice - S4, TXT or RXV
I have a factory built Shuttle 2+2 based upon the RXV chassis. It has the excellent speed and torque of the RXVs AC drive, and the passenger carrying capacity of the Shuttle. If you consider an RXV, you'll probably want a mid-2012 or newer so it has the Curtis controller. More torque than the older Danaher controllers.

2. I was not aware there were different types of TXT's. I am looking at 2012s and up. 3. I will not be out deep into the woods for long periods of time and this would be the activity that is done the least out of my original list. Do you still think upgrading all of those components is necessary? 4. I am going with a 48v setup. |

That 72v looks to be a little less than the S4HO, but would still need some mods to match it. I think it would end up being more expensive.

Re: Need advice - S4, TXT or RXV
The S4 HO is a 48 volt DC shunt wound motor with a 400amp controller. The RXV has a 48 volt AC motor with a 230 amp controller. The TXT has the same motor as the S4 HO but only has a 250amp controller.
What controller could I add to the RXV AC setup to be equivalent to the S4HO torque wise? I have a feeling the RXV will provide more mph on flat ground but on the hills I will suffer. |

I suggest you go to a dealer and do a back to back test drive of a TXT and RXV and you will definitely notice how much stronger the RXV AC system is. The biggest downside to an RXV for your application is the big tires, as the RXV uses its motor as brakes. If the tires are too big it reduces the braking power. I don't have experience with big tires so I don't know the maximum recommended size but I do see EZ-GO sells some pretty big wheel/tires combos on their own website now. Some other posters seem to indicate that the TXT is easier to work on and may take off-road hammering better than an RXV. "SLTinTexas" posted an impressive video of what a reprogrammed RXV with big tires can do. My 100% stock cart isn't quite that powerful but it's not far off either. http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/elect...xv-torque.html |

Re: Need advice - S4, TXT or RXV
I have an RXV w/ the 350A controller. Torque and hills are not a problem. I would be concerned about stating whether or not towing a 6x10 trailer around was a good idea...It's still a golf cart and would think a gas UTV would be better suited...but what do I know.
My cart still has the stock brake....I'm sure I have been lucky to not have had any issues. I have 12" wheels. |

Re: Need advice - S4, TXT or RXV
If your upgrading the ENTIRE drive system a PDS cart will be fine, thats the cart your currently looking at. I carry a upgrade package, new motor controller and solenoid, gives you about 50% more torque then stock and top speed around 20 mph, Its an Alltrax controller, which is programmable, and an Admiral motor. IMO its better to build the cart YOU want, and if you could find a PDS cart in decent shape for like 2-2500k, another 2500k and you have exactly what you want
