94 EZGO Electric Intermittent No Reverse
I replaced all of my batteries and cables today. I tried to back it out of the garage and heard a pop and saw a little smoke so I turned the key off. The cable going from the FNR switch to the M- post on the controller (?) was touching the housing on the controller so I moved it out of the way. The cart will not move in reverse every time I try to move it but works in forward just fine. Upon further inspection I found there to be a diode (?) between the B+ and B- posts on the controller which the wires have burnt in two on. Would this diode cause the loss of reverse?

Rank amateur here but until the pros arrive...
First, i think the item you describe as a diode is actually a capacitor. I have driven my cart with out one from time to time so that may not be your problem. Second, you say your cart is a 1994, is it a Marathon? I think that is the change over year. On mine the first step in troubleshooting is the microswitch and solenoid. When you put it in reverse and push the pedal does it always "click" to show power is going to the controller? Thanks |

It is not needed for operation and would affect both F and R if it had an operational impact. ----------- If the cart works normally in F, then the problem is in the FNR assembly. Does the solenoid click when pedal is pushed in R? If it does, the problem is some of the high current contacts are not making contact when in R. If it doesn't, the lever on MS-2 is not dropping into the detent on the cam when in R. The attached schematic has the high current circuit highlighted. FNR is shown in F with A shorted to D and C shorted to B. In R, A shorts to B and C shorts to D. The only difference between F and R (other than the direction the armature rotates and 1/2 speed reverse) is the direction of current flow through the stator winding. |

Re: 94 EZGO Electric Intermittent No Reverse
Thank you very much! That's what I was afraid of but it never hurts to ask. I will check it out in the morning and order the appropriate parts.
