1990 ezgo v glide small spark, resistor coil HUGE arc
So I am brand new to golf carts; really brand new. My mom bought me a 1990 ezgo marathon(?) off Craigslist for $450 because she got tired of seeing me walk all day everyday at work. I was able to score a new set if batteries for it and I ran like a champ for several months.
All of a sudden, I felt heat from underneath after a very short ride and was able to track down a very large orange spark and about as bright as a weld spark, on the first post of the second resistor coil at very low speed. Wide open throttle, spark goes out. I took the coils out to check the tightness, for breaks, etc and everything looked like what I except as normal. While under it, I saw a very faint spark (almost blueish), almost like the brushes in a cordless drill if you look through the slots, on the v glide in what I think is the second position. I have done no modifications other than new lights, but the new found spark came way after. As I said, it was all of a sudden. I get that its old and stuff wears out, but any advice on what I need to replace would be appreciated. |

Might need new contacts, or may only need an adjustment. Sometimes you can even get away with flipping the contacts over to use the "fresh" side. Do the resistor coils look straight & even, or do they have a distorted droopy look? Does it get hot while sitting still? That "hot while sitting still" is a mega problem, but usually easy fix.

They resistor coils look uniform and clean. They do not get hot just sitting there. The accelerator has to be engaged at low speed.. I was wondering if the small spark on the V Glide contacts was normal or if that could be presenting a bigger problem like the coils. The large spark on the coil has me puzzled though because it is only at the post. It is not the entire coil

If the coils get hot when not moving, the solenoid is likely on all the time, not just when the pedal is pressed. A great way to start a fire.

Re: 1990 ezgo v glide small spark, resistor coil HUGE arc
But they are not hot all the time. Only when low speed/15-20%throttle.
I just checked the contacts on the V Glide and lightly sanded them to be sure they are clean. And it may be a coincidence but the key switch is loose and probably needs to be replaced but when I bumped one if the leads coming off of it it swiveled a bit, but still functional. It kinda seemed like the coil spark is a little smaller now. I moved the switch lead around a bit just to see, and it seems like I can regulate the spark with it. I think it may be mental at this point because I am hoping for a easy solution but it seems weird. It just doesn't make sense that the spark is only on that one post. |

Take a close look at the contacts on the wiper arm and the speed wiper board. They may need some resurfacing (sanding) to clean off any ragged edges?

I lightly sanded them with 2000 grit sandpaper and still the same. I am confused about why that one post.

Re: 1990 ezgo v glide small spark, resistor coil HUGE arc
Are you sure the coils are mechanically connected to the post well?
Looks to me on the coil pic, that arc is between the post and a coil loop? You should not have and arc like that. The whole coil could get red but not an arc. |
