Default Ezgo dcs sputters

I just got a cheap 97 ezgo electric dcs for my granny and the reverse works fine but forward if you gently press the pedal it slowly gains speed and once you are going fast enough you can hold the pedal down. If you slam on the pedal it spudders and barely moves just kind of jerks you around. I put my charger on it and it charged until the green light is barely flickering(I'm not sure how to test the batteries) so it charged up just like my cart with good batteries. I understand that if it spudders under load it could mean bad batteries and reverse is only half power. But how do I check it? Could something else be wrong? I'm not exactly sure how to explain it but I can push the pedal down 10% and keep it there and it will eventually build up to full speed without pushing the pedal down more. If I push pedal down any more it starts to jerk and slow down. Just wondering if it could be something simple or if it's just something expensive

Do you have a digital volt meter?

Every cart should have an in the dash digital battery meter.
Knowing when to recharge can greatly increase the useful lifespan of a battery pack. And the cart is the best load test for the pack, simply watch the meter when you try to go from a standstill to hard & fast uphill.

Can you take the caps off of the batteries and look inside of them to see if they have any water in them?

I'm afraid that without having a multimeter, or volt meter, or something similar it is going to be difficult at best to do any troubleshooting.

Harbor freight sales (actually they give it away for free with any purchase) a multimeter that you could use. I've attached the coupon in this post. All you need is the code off of it. You can literally walk in with a dollar buy a box blade (Click here) at the counter and get the multimeter for free.

They have water in them. So last night I plugged in the cart for an hour or 2 and then unplugged it. Today I drove it with no problem for 30 minutes. Then it completely died and nothing happened(as if it had 0 charge left). If a cart is completely dead how long would a normal 36 volt charger take to charge it full. I will plug it in tomorrow morning and let it charge 24 hrs and then use it and see what happens. I'm guessing the charger the guy had was broken.

You could have 1 or 2 bad batteries. The only way to know would be with a volt meter.

Your charger should kick on when you plug it in and kick off when the pack reaches about 45ish volts.

If the batteries are severely discharged it could take many hours to charge. a lot depends on the charger itself. Is it an automatic charger. If so let it charge until it shuts off. Only add enough distilled water to barely cover the fins when charging depleted batteries. once fully charged, keep the water about a 1/4 in. above the fins. As stated in previous posts a good dvm is a necessity to golf cart owners. Try to get a handheld one for troubleshooting but also get one to install in your cart. You can get a good one from scottyb at carts unlimited to your door for around 20 bucks. best money you can spend to prolong battery life.

I have a cheap volt meter like the one from harbor freight how do I check to see if each battery is good or bad? I won't get a chance to check it until tomorrow afternoon at earliest

Let them charge tonight.

Hopefully the charger is the type that cuts off when finished.

Wait 12 hours after charge has finished. Measure each battery and post those results here.

(Meter turned to DC, black on negative, red on positive)

Take a total pack reading as well, this can be done on the last two batteries, at the positive and negative.
