'02 36V PDS improvements
Hey, all. New to this world and this looks like a friendly island to visit.
Just got an '02 EZGO 36V PDS Freedom TXT off of ebay with '05 batteries for $2K with charger and am pleased so far. A hot rodder at heart, naturally, I'm interested in more speed; eventually I'll be customizing the body as well. From reading forum posts until my eyes bleed, I've got a few ideas but also a few questions. 4 gauge wires will be first, then a controller, then 48V. I still haven't sussed out the significance of PDS, DCS, non PDS or DCS, etc., so I'm not sure whether this controller is suitable: Rebuilt High Performance Curtis Controller, Model 1204, 36-48V 550A for 1995 to 1999 E-Z-GO Medalist/TXT Freedom series with the high speed option and ITS (inductive throttle sensor) Does that '99 cutoff date kill the deal for my '02? The Curtis is only $237.50 which substantially beats the Alltrax 4844 that I'm also considering. What's the deal about programmability? The cart will be for neighborhood transportation (golf course community -- carts OK on streets). I've got some alloy wheels from my wife's sold Volvo convertible I'd like to adapt, and have gotten the impression that bigger wheels, alone, will improve the top speed. Is that true? Will it also reduce torque? (The 'hood is somewhat hilly and the slow down is noticeable.) I'm hoping an appropriate controller will help on the hills, even before I go for the 48V mod. It appears I'm following in Gornoman's Z06 tracks (thanks!), although, as mentioned, I'm unsure of the significance of the difference between his fleet vehicle and my PDS. Many thanks, in advance, for any and all comments. Cheers -- Gary |

Increasing wheel/tire size on PDS carts with stock controllers has been known to kill controllers. Especially when loading with over sized tires/wheels and hilly terrain. |

Re: '02 36V PDS improvements
PG,
Many thanks. It's amazing how many things I missed despite reading the forum for hours. It'd be great to have all the 'conventional wisdom' in one place: PDS, DCS, fleet, shunt-wound, series wound, separately excited, regenerative braking, etc., etc. In the meantime, I apologize for the snail-like progression of my awareness. So. If I get a DCX-400 PDS controller, will my stock 36V motor produce any improved performance (I'm hoping more hill climbing ability...)? If/when I add the larger wheels/tires, will that affect performance? Reliability? What do I need to worry about with bigger wheels/tires? The 48V upgrade? Many thanks, again, for all inputs. Sorry for plowing old ground... Cheers -- Gary |

Re: '02 36V PDS improvements
The DCX line of controllers will net you some gains across the board on 36 volts but not as much as 48 volt will. The 48 volt upgrade alone will give you a 20-25% increase in power. Larger tires will require more power to turn. You will lose a little torque but gain some top end. With the addition of the 400 amp controller and 48 volts it shouldn't be a problem.

I have a '05 PDS with a Alltrax DCX400 controller and 4 ga. battery cables, I'm running a 5" lift and 20" tires. I also have the added weight of a flip-flop rear seat. I got a very noticeable increase in torque when I upgraded to the Alltrax controller. Hills it use to wouldn't climb are no problem now. I also have 3 month old Trojan batteries, have you checked yours after all they are now 4 years old ? |
