TXT PDS won't charge
Hey fellas, new guy here and new to golf carts in general.....looking for some help. I'm rebuilding a 2009 PDS. Carts runs fine but I can't get the batteries to charge. I have 2 chargers that I know are working. I tried them on another cart to be sure. I'm not hearing the click after plugging in. On another thread I read where the white insulator on the ground side in the receptacle was not supposed to be there so I removed it. Still nothing. I'm including a picture of how my receptacle looks so you guys have an idea of what I have. I've seen some that have a reed switch to keep the cart from going while the charger is plugged in..... mine doesn't have that. The little red wire is just screwed onto the hot post. Thanks for the help.. great forum.
BTW - Brand new Trojan batts. |

Re: TXT PDS won't charge
That negative socket looks pretty rough. And all the wires are supposed to be soldered to their "ring" terminals (not really supposed to be the "horseshoe" type).

Re: TXT PDS won't charge
The negative radsok look mighty nasty. Should be bright brass.
Here is a picture of the receptacle with top off and plug with top off inserted. It shows where the Auxiliary contact in plug touches the outside of the negative radsok. Also, what are the make/model of the chargers you are using? |

Re: TXT PDS won't charge
Another thing.....it will go with the charger plugged in. Where does the red wire go? To the key switch to disable the cart? If so, that part isn't working.

Re: TXT PDS won't charge
As originally configured, there was a reed switch (shown in picture CTD posted) connected to the positive radsok and the red wire was connected to the output of the reed switch. When the charger plug was plugged into the receptacle, a magnet in the plug (can be seen if the picture I posted) opened the reed switch, removing the B+ source to the solenoid activation circuit. This arrangement was used on series, DCS and PDS carts and where the other end of the red wire varied between drive systems.but the net resulty was the same. On a PDS cart, the other end goes too J1 Pin-4 on the controller and is the B+ source for the auxiliary power supply, which powers all the external switches and the solenoid coil. However, the reed switch was a high failure item and often left cart drivers stranded out in the middle of nowhere, so EZGO stopped using it sometime in the 2008 time-frame. My 2008 PDS has a small fuse rather than a reed switch and can be driven with charger attached. If driving away while charging is a problem, loop the charger output cable through the steering wheel as a reminder.
The PW-II might have a blown fuse. Can't tell for sure from the picture. There is supposed to be a "V" in the round window. Fuse wires coming from two posts and the pair connecting to a single post. However, that will only reduce the max amps out when it comes on, it won't keep it from coming on. The PW-28115 looks normal. Pop the top off the charger plug and receptacle as shown in the picture I posted and plug it in. Measure the voltage between the silver spring contact (auxiliary contact) and the positive radsok where the white wire is connected. You should get the same voltage as you measure between the main + & - terminals on the battery pack. Since both chargers work on other carts, the problem is the auxiliary contact is not making good contact with the outside surface of the negative radsok. |

CTD, thanks for the wiring diagram. That will help a lot.
