Default Painting Arm Rests/Hip Restraints

My black ones are looking a little worn out. Anyone paint these? I was thinking the same method as the top. Paint adhesion spray then Krylon or equivalent top coat?

I don't remember now which cart you have, but on my 2001 I painted them with truck bed liner. It worked well since they already have a somewhat rough texture. It went on very easy and has held up for almost a year now.

Thanks. Which one did you use and is it a rough textured coating? Seems like I've read some of those paints do well with plastic, and some don't.

Here is what worked for me......

Make sure they are as CLEAN as you can get them.. a good scrubbing with simple green and a scrub brush followed by rinsing should work.

I use Rattle can Duplicolor Adhesion Promoter and their Truck Bedliner.

Follow the directions on the promoter, then multiple VERY LIGHT COATS of the bedliner spray. Don't try to get complete covered in one coat, the buildup of the multiple light coats is what will give it strength and texture.

This also works well on things like bumpers, spike guards and the bag well liner.

Good Luck !

Thanks guys. Same for the top? I was going to use the promoter and then Krylon. I'd like them to match

I think I actually ended up using a couple of different brands. As Tex said, you want them very clean. Dawn dish soap, specifically dawn, is mentioned often in the painting forum as the one to use. There is something in the dawn that helps. The problem with plastics is the oils that leach to the surface. I don't actually remember what piece it was, but just as a test early in my test down, I just wiped one of the plastic pieces off and sprayed it with the bed liner. It held well and looked great so I ended up using it on all of the black plastic I didn't replace.

The roof is a whole different animal. If you look in the paint forum, and online, you'll see all kinds of different methods and a whole bunch of failures. I found a video of a pro painter and he heats the surface with a torch then wipes with mineral spirits. This was to remove the surface oils that keep the paint from bonding. On mine, I tried EVERYTHING and had to re-sand it a couple of times. With the torch, scotch brite pad, dawn and bulldog adhesion promoter I had the best results but it still would come off in a few places. A buddy of mine ended up taking it to his cabinet shop and having his painters do it. It's holding up well.

So, I'd say no worries with everything except for the roof. If you're going to tackle that one, do plenty of research and then be very diligent about the process.
