Default TXT extreme corrosion cleanup?

Hi everyone on BGW:)

I picked up a 2001 Green TXT at an auction yesterday with bad batteries. When I pulled the old batteries out of it, I found they had leaked and corroded all over the battery tray. Surprisingly, it seems that the tray hasn’t rusted out quite yet.

They were very bad quality batteries (RayoVac?), and somebody had way over filled them and tried to charge them.

What is the proper method to remove the garage and from the metal? Just scrape it away? Or should I put something on it? Thank you in advance.

You want to neutralize that acid before it hits the floor/driveway. Best to do this outside.

Mix 1 part baking soda with 3 parts water. Soak the entire area and let it sit/fizz/bubble for a while. Rinse and repeat. You can scrub the heavy areas with a stiff bristled brush. Keep going until it is all neutralized/gone.

I personally like the pressure washing method.

If the tray is worth saving, wire brush it after cleaning it, then spray it with a rust converter (por 15, rust oleum, something) let it harden overnight or longer, then coat it with something durable, rubber, or bed liner.

Then keep your new batteries clean and profit.

If it's not worth saving, just remove it. They sale new ones online in the ~$150 area, aluminum or steel. You might be able to find one cheaper locally.

After baking soda and vinegar- thanks! I think I’ll pressure wash it next, and then coat it. Then some new batteries and we’ll see if the motor and controller work!

Thank you!

Helpful hint.
Reduce those phone pics 50% before uploading - They are 2 Xs as big as the page they are pasted on. Their size makes them impossible to view - even on my 30" screen

That tray actually looks great. I don't see anything wrong with it.

I attached a few photos. I recently acquired two twin 2003 carts, the battery tray in one of them is in my opinion to far gone to repair (photo #1). The tray in the other one I repaired (photo #2). I attached two pics of the repaired tray and what the finish on it looks like (photo #3).

Thank you! I have another old ‘99 TXT with a “too far gone” tray. I was very relieved to find that it was bolted in, and not welded.

I’ve worked too much with those old Marathons...

If you have a welding machine, an old bed frame can be chopped up and made into a tray fairly easily. I made two using the old one for a template. Didn't cost me a dime because I had a couple of old bed frames in the attic i was never going to use.

Thanks bud. I'm the type, I'd rather build it myself and take twice as long lol.
