Default 2013 EZGO RXV Stall/Locks Up under Heavy Load

I will try to explain the best I can so please bear with me. Not sure if this is normal but my 2013 RXV will lock up if I try to climb a hill too steep. If the cart starts to struggle/almost stall up the hill it is almost like the rear end disenages with a loud pop and the motor brake locks up. The only way to disengage it is to turn the key off and back on. The problem is when you try to back down the hill it will do the same thing because of the resistance on the motor which leaves me basically stuck in the middle of the hill until I can finally turn the key switch off and on enough to finally get it to unlock. Any idea why this is happening? Not sure if this is just some kind of protection so the motor does not get overloaded or it is a problem. Any suggestions and help would be much appreciated.

I would say going up the hill your putting to much load on the batteries. The voltage drops and that is why it's locking up on the way up the hill.

That seems reasonable however when I turn the key off to reset everything and back on in Reverse nothing happens when I push the petal. I have to do this several times to finally get it to work and back down the hill.

are you sure your batteries are strong? I had mine do the same thing and I had a bad battery.

Batteries are pretty new (maybe 5 months old) Trojans so I am assuming they are not bad.

Wheels, I'm pretty much just a reader here, and not much of a provider of information, but while you're waiting for the experts to chime in the batteries are always a good place to start. I know I've read of other cases of new batteries where at least one of them was actually bad. It doesn't take much to put your dvm on the pack, each separate battery, and a test while driving as well.

I'll do that right now and report back. Thanks for the replies so far!

Checked batteries and all measure around 12.87v without load. Didn't get a chance to measure them under load because it started raining. One thing that I do notice that is strange is that the directions to put the cart in tow mode say to turn the key to the neutral position then flip the switch to tow mode and the brake will release however on mine the only way I can get the brake to release is the flip the cart in tow mode while the key is in the off position and then switch the key to neutral. I have no idea if that is related or not. I think when the cart is under heavy load close to stalling when climbing a steep hill the cart thinks it has stopped and then engages the motor brake which would explain the popping noise in the diff when it locks up since load is on the gears. Could I have a faulty motor brake and if so could that also be the problem with the tow switch sequence being backwards from what is instructed on the label?

I think you have a good controller & motor. I really think the under load voltages is the next thing. But you could be having HPD (high pedal disable) codes, and generally the solution for that is open up the pedal box and give it the super cleaning. Grass, golf tees, and all sorts of other garbage is known to get down there and stop things up (I once saw a tiny Maglight jammd in there). Also, do you have any aftermarket floor mats (like "tire strip" mat), they are also known to get jammed up with the pedal.

Thanks CG! I will check that out tomorrow. Any idea about the tow mode sequence being backwards from what it says to do? I have to flip the switch first and then turn the key to N when the instructions on the controller cover say turn the kyr the N and then flip the switch? Also just out of curiosity what voltage should I be reading when the cart is in max load? Going to test that out tomorrow as well.
