Lifted EZGO TXT 4" now shocks too short
I lifted my cart with Jake's E-Z-GO Medalist / TXT 4" Electric Block Lift Kit. Since I added additional seats in the rear, I also upgraded with heavy duty springs. After everything was installed, I am finding that the shocks no longer extend far enough to attach to the rear axle. When I extend the shock all the way down, it clears the opening by only 1/2"; not nearly enough to put the bushings in.
So, what's the options? Any easy fix using existing shocks? Is there a shock that has a little longer range that would fit this scenario. I understand the standard shocks are 18", do they make a 19" or 20" shock that would fit the EZGO TXT? |

Get some shock extensions from your local AutoZone or O'reilly auto parts. Should be around $10-15 for a pair.

The spring plate with the shock mount loop on it should be on top of the spring, so your shocks should reach without the extensions or need for new shocks. If you don't have the instructions with the pictures, you can search them online. PM me if you can't find them.

Rear shocks for a 1968 Mustang fit all four corners of my 1996 gas TXT. If yours has the same mounting (studs top and bottom) then those should work well. I tried extensions first but with a lifted cart the gas charged Gabriels provided more stability than the stock non gas charged shocks.

Thanks for the replies. I will look for the extensions. Is it proper operating status for the shocks to be fully extended or should there be some play both ways?

Good "charged" shocks will want to default to "fully extended",. But many golf carts only have "dampeners" , which only "resist change" in a way that's different than car "shocks".

Re: Lifted EZGO TXT 4" now shocks too short
Most shocks should be sized so the suspension is the limiting factor in up and down movement. Shocks for leaf spring suspensions like the TXT do not have built in protection from over extension or complete compression. Coil over shocks are typically built to be the limiting factor in suspension travel. Hence they tend to have rubber bump stops on the piston shafts.
Shocks for the TXT should be somewhat compressed when the cart weight is resting on the axles. And be of a stroke length that the suspension bottoms out before the shock does. All shocks, gas charged or not, are designed to dampen sharp spring movements and minimize "pogoing" from softer bumps. Standard shocks use air inside to allow space for shock compression. Gas charged shocks utilize an inert gas, under slight pressure, to allow for compression. The pressurized gas helps keep the oil from emulsifying over prolonged rough surfaces which weakens its ability to hydraulically control suspension movement. A side effect of the low pressure gas is a slightly stiffer "feel" but no change in damping strength. Golf cart shocks for such as the TXT are just old technology that are adequate for the intended service of brief trips interrupted by brief pauses. Any vehicle intended to be used like many of us do is a good candidate for an automotive type gas charged shock absorber. Sent from my Moto G (4) using Tapatalk |

Update on shock extenders.... Ordered, installed and they worked out great. Got them from Amazon by searching 1966 Mustang shock extenders.
The red bushings were bought at Autozone. That's all they had! Thanks for help. |
