Default Solenoid or Controller?

I have a EZGO Freedom PDS that died on my daughter. I had to tow it home and ended up having to replace the motor. I replaced it with a motor from D&D systems that is suppose to be compatible as a replacement. Now, the cart will go in reverse, but in forward the solenoid clicks on then clicks off about 2 secs later and the cart doesn't move. I'm thinking that the motor is drawing too much current for the controller and it is shutting down the solenoid. Does that sound right or am I way off? If so, would replacing the controller with one that can handle more current fix the issue?

Chances are if it was towed home and probably in Run mode it took out the motor and controller. Forward and Reverse are two different circuits in the controller. Motor will pull roughly the same current in forward and reverse. Try switching the 10Ga white and black wires on top of the controller and see if it will run forward.

I’m the one that towed it home, just through the subdivision, but I did put it in tow mode before I towed it. I did swap the wires and it did go forward, but slowly. I assumed that was because the controller goes slower in reverse. I also assumed that it meant my wiring to the motor is okay.

A stock PDS controller runs the motor at about half speed when reverse is selected.

Sounds like you need a new controller and this would be a good time to upgrade to an Alltrax XCT48400-PDS (or larger), along with a suitably sized solenoid.

What is the model number of the D&D motor you installed?

I'm at work at the moment, but I'm pretty sure it's the 170-500-0001. I can confirm it tonight.

I'll have to confirm it when I get home, but I don't think it's the 502-01.

It is in fact a 170-500-001, everything else is stock. Should I replace the controller?

That is a high-speed motor and has about 30% more speed than a stock PDS motor, but about 10% less torque.

Yes, the controller needs to be replaced.

Drop an Alltrax XCT48400-PDS in your cart and it will do upwards of 30 MPH on stock height (18") tires. The motor will be spinning around 7000RPM at that cart speed, which probably exceeds D&D's max recommended RPM for that motor, but the max RPM is user programmable in the XCT.
