Help Me Build My '87

I haven't had a cart for nearly 10 years. I picked up an 87 EZGO and plan on jazzing it up a bit. The intended use is around the yard and also at camp grounds. I'm going to lift it 4" and put tires and wheels on it and maybe some lights.

The first thing I need to do is put new batteries in it as the current ones have been frozen although will take a charge and move the cart a bit. There is a lot of info about batteries but my first question is does anyone know what this cart came for batteries from a spec perspective. I think the Trojan T105 are probably correct but man they are expensive. Is there anything comparable?

If I add a controller and motor upgrade down the road will the batteries support the upgrade?

What size wheels and tires (type) are recommended for the intended use?

hi joe......The T105 are correct, spec wise. as far as comparable batteries, US Battery (US-2200), Crown (cr-225), Exide (GC-135), Interstate (U2200) are a few....as long as they are rated at a 20Hr Rate of 225 AH or better, you will be good to go. To be honest, get the highest AH rated batteries you can afford as with uping the load on the drive system (by putting larger tires on) it will ensure your range will be up to the demand.

as far as will they handle the load after a controller upgrade, YES.

for wheels/tires.....I would recommend either 22" or 23" tires, there are a ton of different tread designs, just find one that you like.

Can I upgrade to a newer style charger and if so, what is the right kind to use? Also what diameter rims? 10"?

get you a DPI charger, you can get at the best price from one of our sponsors, cartsunlimited.net. A stock charger stops after its done charging, a DPI will go into float mode after its finished the actual charge cycle and will keep your cart charged until you are ready to use it next.

as far as wheel sizes go.....you can find tires in 10", 12" and 14", all depends on what you want.

Bringing this back to the top. I haven't upgraded any thing yet other than seat covers and hub caps and am looking for more torque. Is there anything I can do to jazz this thing up without breaking the bank?
I also want to put some rims and tires on with the SteelEng 4" lift

Surely someone has some input on what parts would make this cart more torquey...

I think your only option is spending some $. Some carts get a bit of performance boost from reprogramming, etc, but I’ve never come across any posts here about anyone doing that with an 87 marathon. Hate to say it, but I think you’re going to be in bad shape putting 23” tires on that thing. IMHO, you’re doing your upgrades backwards. You need a controller capable of delivering enough to turn those big tires you’re talking about. New controller and 48v. That cart was designed to carry a couple of guys 18 holes on like 18” (?) tires.

Someone definitive will probably be along soon, but I think that’s where you’re at.

More torque will require more electrical energy, no way around that (assuming you are Not willing to trade away top speed). Increasing the electrical demand on the stock resistor coil system will be it's demise.
