Default Previous owner bought new battery pack but installed them wrong...

Actually the batteries were installed correctly bit the charger was not.

I just bought a 2013 Bad Boy Buggie Hybrid and immediately noticed the previous owner had connected the charger wires to only one battery when he replaced the battery pack.

This is a 48 volt system and he installed 4 new US Battery US12VXZ batteries but connected the pos wire of the charger to the first in line battery and the neg wire to the neg of the first in line battery as well. Doesn't this mean he was only charging one battery?

When I checked the water level of that battery one cell was completely dry but it still measured 12 volts. The other three batteries had the correct water levels.

I fixed the charger wire issue and refilled the dry battery cell battery then charged them all overnight. I ran the buggy today and got to the equivalent of about a mile before it needed to recharge.

What kind of mess do I have here? Did he overcharge the first in line battery and the others didn't get charged at all? TIA

I have never seen a 48v charger that would turn on when only 12v was present at the port. You need to charge each battery individually to even out their voltage. Or maybe borrow a 36v charger to charge up the 3 batteries that weren't being charged. (And hook the 36v charger to only the 3 batteries that weren't being charged).
