Default ‘95 EZGO 36v upgrading

I recently purchased this golf cart and I was hoping to get some tips/advice. I bought it with a lift, bigger tires, and a light kit. Everything else (motor, solenoid, controller) are all stock. It has 2 1/2 year old batteries on it, which the lights are wired to as well. The seller mentioned that the cart has a noticeable power decrease when they are hooked up, so I’ve unhooked them for the time being. On a slight uphill, with a full charge, it may go 8-10 mph, and going up the driveway )which I’d say is a 25 or so percent grade) it almost slows to a stop. I’m wondering where to start with upgrading the torque/speed. This cart is almost solely to get around our somewhat flat neighborhood on asphalt. Is it worth doing a new motor, controller, solenoid? Or should I start with the batteries and cables? I have seen converting to 48v but this being my first cart I’d like to stay with the 36v. I don’t need a ton of speed/torque, but I’d like to not worry about making it into my garage. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

well the very first thing we need to know before suggesting anything is which drive system your cart is, either a SERIES or SEPEX Drive. and here is how you tell the difference.

tell us what you have and we can go from there.

Right, I knew I would forget something in there. It’s a SEPEX, but I’m not too sure between the DCS and PDS. I have a FNR switch just below the seat. I’m thinking it’s a PDS.

I bet its a DCS as PDS came along later. Post a pic of the F&R from the battery side to be sure.
Upgrades are very different for Series and DCS carts in this year.

I believe you’re correct. I just got into the office, but when I get back to the cart I’ll post a pic.

Assuming you’re right, ScottyB, and it is a DCS, would you have any suggestions/advice?

DCS will work very well for a neighborhood cruiser with moderate hills. This drive system makes more speed than Series ( good for the street) and makes more torque than the PDS (better for the hills). For general use I would install the XCT400 Alltrax controller and HD SW180 solenoid.
Later on if you want more power you can increase the voltage to 42v on the stock motor or go with a bigger Admiral B2 motor and even 48 volt operation.
Lots of options with this cart

ScottyB, thank you for the tips! I have the cart going to the shop just for some preventative maintenance. Depending on what they find, I’m planning on ordering the parts you recommended!
