Default 96’ ezgo not moving after snap sound

So... I was pulling stuff around with the golf cart again this weekend. Old owners of the property had dumped rebar off in a corner of the lot and had piled some dirt on it. So we had been pulling them out one at a time with the cart. On the last one of the night yesterday. I hear a snap sound. Cart no longer goes forward or reverse. You hear the motor spin in both directions but no movement. What did I break? The gears? Axle?

I think I need a four wheeler to do this kind of work. Or can I beef up the cart to match the power it has?

Thank you in advance!

If it was a gear you could push the cart a little bit and it would try to go. You need to jack up the rear of the cart and pull off the wheels. Have someone watch the hubs and while holding pressure on the brakes hit the go pedal but just enough to make the motor spin. Now look and see if one side spins the castle nut but not the hub. If one side does that then that hub is stripped. If neither moves you probably broke an axle. Now time to pull the differential cover and see what you have.

Probably a stripped hub. Does the castellated nut in the middle spin when you run it? Take off the wheel and cover. Probably passenger side.

Going to HF today and getting a jack to lift it up. Will report back when I have it air-born with wheels off.

Small grind noise when you try to go ?????

Spun hub is my WAG .....

1)jack rear of cart up and place jackstands under axle ...take tires off
2) have someone hold brake while pressing gas.
3) look for nut in middle of brake drum to turn
3) replace brake drum on side that has spinny-nut (highly technical term--makes me feel impotant)

If it is a hub Ausco makes a heavy duty replacement. Part # PK2127 $64.95
Get a pair - they are unbreakable if installed correctly.

Those are available again? Sweet, the best upgrade to any Ezgo with the old integrated drum hub. Funny, Yamaha never played that game, and never had that problem. A serious Ezgo weak link fixed by the aftermarket. I was putting (kinda expensive, but never fails) Yamaha hubs on ezgos before the aftermarket solution existed.

I stinking LOVE you people! I just read this and sure enough, my passenger side Brake Drum Splines are stripped. I thought I was going to need a whole new back end!
I followed the above procedure and the passenger side castle nut spun, but the Hub did not. Took off the Brake Drum and where the grooves are supposed to be is as smooth as the mud on a broken down Yamaha! Ha!

So life happened and I just got time tonight to pull the wheels off. The hubs have already been upgraded to the Asco, I got them from ScottyB a few years back. I replaced one that snapped off in a accident and had a spare. Was hoping that would have been the issue but I don’t think I’m that lucky. Splines look good to go. How do I remove the differential to check the inside gears? I see the couple of bolts. Drain the fluid, remove bolts and pop cover off? What should I look for? Please see attached pictures

Yes they are still in tact. Guess something else is the weak link.
