Default ez go electric taking off

hey yall i need some help as i am new to the whole golf cart thing. I have a 1979 ez go marathon electric cart. last weekend at the lake when i would turn it on and put it in forward or reverse it would start to take off with out pushing the pedal. im not real familiar with electric carts and was hoping i can get an answer as to why it is doing this and what i need to look at or fix to get it running correctly. Any and all help is appreciated .

The first thing I would do is get the drive wheels off the ground, up on jackstands. Until you figure out the problem. If not they may be pulling it out of the lake, maybe with you in it. Start by looking for a stuck solenoid.

problem is likely welded/stuck sol.

could also be pedal switch or mechanical pedal adjustment or return.

The usual cause is burred and pitted speed wiper board contacts. with the cart in neutral observe the action of the throttle wiper arm. Likely the bottom end contacts are so pitted and burred the wiper cannot return to the zero/off position. This keeps the solenoid activation micro switch triggered and can cause accidents.
