48 volt to 56 volt conversion
I have a 48 volt Western which is built on an EZGO platform. I can squeeze one more 8 volt battery onto the existing battery frame. I have a 48 volt 1205 Curtis Controller rebuilt to 700 amps and 2 gauge welding cable wiring and 400 amp continuous HD solenoid good to 1000 amp peak. AMD 11 hp Motor @ 48 volts has been rebuilt by Plumb Quick for more speed and FNR has been beefed up. I am going to trickle charge the extra battery separately when SOC of the pack gets to about 80% or so. Checked with Curtis and they said controller could handle up to 10 more volts. Current charge cycle takes the pack to 58+ volts. So, I think I won't blow anything up as I want just a touch more speed, but don't want a new controller. Experts please advise.
Note: Cart is a 1995 Western upgraded by me from 42 volt to 48 volt. I have a gps speedometer and with slightly larger rear tires I was getting very close to 30 mph. Speed limit in my neighborhood is 25 mph, but I still want this cart go faster just for fun. |

Re: 48 volt to 56 volt conversion
The battery on the separate charge is sure to live a shorter life than the others. This is assuming the original charger is currently hooked to the correct number of batteries, and the extra battery will only be charged by the other "trickle charger. If you have all batteries hooked to the old charger, all batteries will be undercharged.

Re: 48 volt to 56 volt conversion
Thanks, that is what I plan on doing, i.e., separate charging. I figure about 15% more speed and not much strain on the original/upgraded equipment I have.
